No, not really. But I did actually find a meat-free product yesterday that tastes as good as, if not better than, the meat version - Morningstar Farms Meat-Free Corn Dogs.
Good enough that I will likely only eat these, rather than the meat versions, saving at least 3-6 piglets a year from consumption.
To the vegan crowd out there - good work! Now make a hamburger patty that doesn’t smell like a Sumo wrestler took a dump on a burning tire, and I’ll buy that too!
Saint Zero, please understand I am not unhappy about your post, or your making it.
But I do just want to say one thing before people get started - I do not want this thread to be an anti-PETA or anti-vegan one. I wanted to grab people’s attention with a provocative title, true, but I really wanted to say that maybe there is hope for vegans who are trying to convert die-hard carnivores like myself.
Yes, and cheaper too. It has to be cheaper than real meat. If they can pull that off, they will convert MANY people. Well… not really convert since these people will not be throwing pies or chaining thenselves to cows or anything. But they will be getting people to eat a lot less meat. And isn’t that one of their main goals? If they spent a little more time on their goals, and less time trying to plaster their name everywhere, they just might accomplish something.
… sorry, I know this is not supposed to be a bashing thread. I am trying not to bash. Just saying that if the food tassts good, and is CHEAPER than beef, they will eat it.
Well, a good point too. I didn’t notice at first, but they do cost a bit.
Still, after just having eaten 3 of them for breakfast (I know…), I have to say that even though they were $3.45 for 4 of them, I’ll continue to buy them.
Plus, they are much lower fat than a “real” corn dog. 150 calories, and 4 grams of fat per doggie.

I am a meat and dairy girl myself but for me it’s not about vegan or not, it’s about good tasting food.
If you have a Red Robin restaurant near you, they have an awesome veggie burger. I am too chicken (hehe) to try the veggie burgers in the frozen food section though.
Oh, and corn dogs? Eeeewwwww – never liked the critters. But then again I am not a big hot dog either.
Morningstar also makes a good imitation chicken nugget. I find that I like them a little over cooked, so their texture is not so soft. Also, I like to dip them in A-1 steak sauce (I know that is kinda funny, but I really do.) They have a buffalo wing version of their chicken nuggets, but they have 9 grams of fat!
I have tried ALL the versions of fake hamburger patties (Morningstar, GardenBurger, BocaBurger) and they ALL taste like crap! No matter HOW I try to prepare them, or WHAT I try to cover them with–YUCK!!!
I do have a bag of tofu crumbles that I am going to try in place of ground beef the next time I make tacos. I have had people tell me that when mixed in recipes like this, it really does taste like meat. We’ll see. Every time I open my freezer I see the bag sitting there…I touch it…and then I am too afraid to open it and use it. Someone…hold my hand… Phil? Peta?
Anthracite, they also make mini-corn dogs, which are nice as a snack or (very) light meal. If you want to experiment more with veg food, they’re a good brand to try-- they make “chix” patties that are quite yummy, also a “burger” and cheese wrap.
Their chix patties remind me of something I was served at lunch in grade school (in a good way, I swear!). Not that I mind, but I’m wondering if they were feeding us soy instead of meat, without telling us.
Well, I am a meat eater, but not that often. I actually prefer tofu in all its wonderful manifestations. Brunch, however, cannot be undertaken without sausage or bacon. I have tried meat substitute products because I have many vegetarian friends, but don’t usually come back for seconds. The only one I really can’t stand, though, is tempeh (sp?). Is this not the most vile…oh…gross…ick. Must. Visit. Bathroom.
Michi: What brand of the crumbly stuff do you have? Green Giant makes a good one, and there’s a sausage-flavored brand called “Gimme Lean!” That’s excellent. Not only is it good in tacos, but in spaghetti sauces and stuffed peppers and things, too.
Anthracite: Welcome to the Dark Side! THe best burger that you can buy frozen, IMHO, is the Morningstar Farms “Prime Patties.” Don’t nuke them, though–toss them in a frying pan sprayed with PAM or something for about 5 minutes per side, and they’re really good.
The fake meat I have is also by Morningstar. Maybe I’ll go out and buy the Green Giant kind and donate the Morningstar stuff to the stray cats outside…
