Peta: If I had moves like this, girls would be lining up to shoot me

Apparently PETA’s next move itry to get Hamburg Pennsylvania to change its name to “Veggieburg”, in exchange for $15,000 worth of vegetable patties. It seems the townspeople are less than impressed.

I got this off the AP newswire in my paper.

Now, perhaps its just me, but does anyone else think PETA is now trying to actively drive its membership away? Honestly, who comes up with this stuff? Do they have a bad taste committee? Is there some sort of mismanaged strategy? Or is this mere methodless insanity?

I honestly cannot think of any rational human being who would think this is good advertising. The old adage is wrong - there IS such a thing as bad publicity. Its a patently blatant media stunt, if a mildly entertaining one, and it looks just plain stupid.

As for the title, it was a joke on my continuing inability to date women. My younger brother, of course, was dating left and right in grade school. Grade School! Whats up with that? Ok, that was totally off-topic and you don’t have to answer it.

In other news, NOW offered Brest, France 12.000F to change their name to a more gender-neutral “Back”, France.

Which shows how extremely ignorant they are because the food item is named after the German city and not the other way around.

Well, it’s no better than one of their other ideas. PETA stopped being about the animals, and became a bunch of attention whores a long time ago.

So what’s the debate?

Whether PETA’s attempts at free publicity for their campaigns are effective?

I think the amount of air time that this board, for example, provides to PETA means that they are highly effective. Have they had a major campaign lately that hasn’t made it onto the SDMB at least once?

But as I said it isn’t helping them. There IS such a thing as bad publicity. And I don’t understand why they think making fools out of themselves is a good thing. Actualy, I agree that making fools out of them is a good thing, I just don’t understand why they do it, too.

i guess you’ll have to define ‘effective.’
effective in getting their name out? sure. effective in gathering support? um…no.

i don’t know that you can say that there is no such thing as bad press.

besides, with every group that they alienate, that is less money that they can count on to support their activities.

Most near everybody here has heard of Adolf Hitler. Most near every one of them wouldn’t run out and follow him. It is possible for publicity to be bad.

My theory is that PETA is not a real organization. It is a bunch a dudes with a weird sense of humor who thought of an ingenious way to see pretty girls naked. All of these type of things are just ways to have a few giggles between “I’d rather go naked than wear fur” photo shoots.

There’s no debate here. This should be in The Pit or MPSIMS.

Well, PETA did try to get Hamburg, Germany to change its name as well… http://uk.news.yahoo.com/030428/80/dypbw.html

City officials were not at all amused.

Just FYI:

(1) PETA asked Hamburg, PA, to change its name; the town’s name is connected with Germany, not the food.

(2) But PETA also asked Hamburg, NY, to change its name (the previous week); that town, while obviously connected to Germany, also regards itself as “the birthplace of the hamburger.” So PETA’s argument is a bit stronger there.

Just wanted to clarify. Mind you, while I can admire someone who is morally committed to strict veganism (just as I can admire devout Buddhists, etc.), I still think PETA’s full of effing loonies, to wit:

It is.

You’re 100% wrong. For one, PETA is and always has been run by a woman. She doesn’t have a weird sense of humor (I don’t think she HAS one); she’s just willing to do absolutely anything for the cause no matter how stupid it is. Anything for attention, which is why PETA get celebrities onboard even through they support terrorism.

I guess the debate here is whether or not Bad publicity, no matter how effective, is good for a cause. Ok, we always talk about PETA on these boards which means their publicity IS effective. But we always talk about PETA in the context of how stupid and out of touch they are to mainstream society and reality in general. So are these harebrained schemes justified just because they keep PETA notoriously in the limelight?

and is using the term “Harebrained” an affront to all long eared rodentia?

should I have said hairbrained? (which absolutely makes no sense to me)

Well, people still talk about the KKK … but then, publicity = wider audience = pissing more people off but also = reaching more individuals who think like you.

So PETA’s idiotic PR will be effective in getting them more support … but only from idiots, most likely. More moderate/rational vegans/animal rights supporters will likely be disenchanted.
and btw X~ – I don’t think hares are rodentia … they’re lagomorpha
