Am I the only person who could not care less about this whole thing?
Do I have to sift through all of this garbage just in case something in here matters in any way? Oh sure, it’s probably really really important. Like something about it put someone in harm’s way.
But if not, who the f*** cares?
I have better things to do. There are socks to be knitted out of pretty yarn on tiny tiny needles that look like toothpicks.
Well, I kind of care, because I feel bad for his wife, and because for the life of me I cannot figure out how anyone has time to run a war and still write out, on average, over 35 emails (not texts) a day to anyone, when I can barely answer the three a week I get that really need answers! My imaginary boyfriend gets sometimes 250 emails a day from his work, which does not involve running a war, and I’m lucky if I get one a week from him about personal stuff…he just doesn’t have the time. Texts, yes, I could see the number being that high, but emails? 30,000 emails over two years?
And then I wonder what kind of batshit crazy this author is, sending out anonymous threatening emails to other women she thinks might possibly talk to her boyfriend, and how badly her husband and kids must be feeling now. And I wonder if that Rielle Hunter chick knows these two women, because there seems to be a rash of women latching on to men in authority positions saying they want to write their bios or make documentaries about them and then ruining their lives.
And then I wonder about why these guys fall for this crap, and then I remember my ex-husband…lol.
You could knit tiny little socks for my tiny little boys! I still have to start the latest one’s hat and he’s ten days old!
I care because the crazy is flying fast and furious, and you have to wonder what other crazy don’t we know yet. So far we have one general/CIA head taken down, the head of the troops in Afghanistan and (formerly) candidate to be a much bigger general batting cleanup, a fake cancer charity, a shirtless and a bit-too-involved FBI agent, Eric Cantor, and a television station broadcasting an “All Up in my snatch” fake book cover. And this is DAY TWO. What the f’ing hell is going on??
To clarify, Petraeus wasn’t running a war, he was running the CIA (while letting a secret spiral out of control); it’s John Allen who was running the war in Afghanistan while writing 41 inappropriate e-mails per day; it’s Petraeus’ biographer who threatened the Miami socialite and the Miami socialite who…oh never mind.
If it was just sex its about as important as Eisenhower boinking his driver while kicking Nazi ass. But if there was top secret information being released to civilians that is a big deal.
It’s coming out that the number of emails (30,000 or so) was gross over-estimation. I forget the actual figure but I think it was less than 100, with the error stemming from multiple copies, cc’s, and such. Not that it really changes anything, but I really don’t see why it’s such a huge story either. Although, I did read yesterday that in the military, adultery can be a crime, which I was not aware of.
Even if there was not TS info being released, that potential was there because he was engaged in an activity (extramarital affair) that could have exposed him to blackmail. Just like Obama’s secret service guys cavorting with prostitutes, this is a Very Bad Idea and ought to have been grounds for dismissal if he hadn’t resigned.
So yes, the Petraeus scandal is an important matter of public interest.
I care. I admired and respected Petraeus for his knowledge and leadership. There is the attitude that business is business and personal is personal but when a person is high-ranking in the military and government, there is no separation. What he did is punishable, just like the naval submarine commander who faked his death to end an affair.
I don’t ‘care’ so much as I find the whole thing quite amusing.
The good part is that it doesn’t really matter; nobody’s going to lose their home or their health insurance because Petraeus was getting some extracurricular nookie, or because a besotted wingnut FBI agent decided that some faintly threatening emails to the woman he had the hots for needed to be brought to the attention of the House Majority Leader because Obama and Benghazi or something.
ETA: But some less-than-flattering things about Petraeus’ professional conduct have come to light as a result of this. Since he’s already resigned, once again, it doesn’t matter, but it seems that unauthorized sexytime was what he could lose his job over, instead of the stuff he perhaps *should *have lost his job over.
I can, however, see the argument that someone in as important a position as his shouldn’t open himself up to potential blackmail.
Also… dammit, man, you’re supposed to be *good *at keeping secrets. It’s pretty much your job. Letting something like this leak just looks unprofessional.
That’s the problem with having an affair: a second person already knows your secret, and that second person may not be as good as you at keeping secrets. Case in point, Broadwell foolishly engaged in activities that drew the attention of the FBI and led to the affair being found out; there was precious little that Petraeus could have done to prevent that from happening (apart from not banging her in the first place).
