The most frickin’ annoying thing in the world is living a few blocks down the street from the WBC and sitting next to one of Phelps’ grandsons in my Chemistry class.
Oh, another Topekan on the Dope! I drive by their place on 12th st. all the time, and they picket my church, at 8th and Polk, about one Sunday in three.
Probably not; whe looks like Robocop with his helmet off.
whe=she :smack:
Pennsylvania does, in fact, have a law preventing protesting at funerals; protesters are supposed to stay 500 feet away.
I think part of what changed Phred’s mind was the fact that the Amish allowed the State Police to provide security duty. The Patriot Guard is one thing, but the State Police have the actual power of arrest, with the added bonus of being harder to sue should a skirmish take place.
According to this article from the Harrisburg Patriot-News, Shirley Phelps-Roper had to commit in writing that WBC would not picket at the funerals. Reneging on that deal would mean a $500,000 penalty. I don’t agree with Gallagher’s politics, but I have to thank him for taking that bullet for us. Having the WBC there had the potential to get VERY ugly.

Can a visiting mod please fix the coding?

Yet another contrast between the Phelps’ brand of “Christianity” and those they are protesting: Customers of Amish markets in our area have raised over $500,000 to go towards medical bills for the injured girls. And if there are funds left over? The Amish have said that they’ll go towards college scholarships for the shooters’ children.
It’s seldom you see two such shining opposites of love and hate in the same situation, isn’t it?
I never thought Phelps could top picketing at Mr. Rogers’s funeral (apparently, not warning the children that God hates fags made him a “fag-enabler”), but this…wow.
I mean, seriously, if I was describing someone evil, and I wanted to get across just how evil they were by thinking up depravities for them, I might say something like “he’s so evil he would celebrate the murder of Amish children” as an example. But I wouldn’t think anyone would actually do it! It’s like he’s trying to out-evil himself!
I don’t know that I could be that charitable so quickly. I mean, there’s a spillover effect, and for them to be able to see past that and know the children and the widow had nothing to do with it is huge, and I give them major kudos.
I don’t think the Columbine shootists’ parents were treated as well after the massacre…but maybe I’m not remembering correctly.
I have to give props to the Amish for such a magnanimous gesture. I really don’t think I could be so generous of spirit even though my mind would know the family had nothing to do with the crime in question.
I almost have to wonder though if, had the Phelps Klan gone through with their picket, the Amish would have had such a forgiving attitude towards them.
My husband corrected me on my earlier statement – it’s not that proceeds after payment of medical bills will go towards scholarships for the shooter’s children, the Amish have said that they will “share in the proceeds,” meaning that they will take care of the shooters’ children’s needs right along with their own children’s needs.
And I think the Amish would have forgiven the Phelps. They seem willing to forgive virtually anything except those who choose to leave their community. It’s an interesting blind spot, and subject fo ra different discussion, but I think they would feel as compelled to forgive Phelps’ spewing of hatred as they did the shooter’s. That’s just what they do, difficult as it seems to the rest of us.
Actions like those of the Amish make me feel that Humanity might just be worth something after all.
Yeah, but you get a clunk, not a that satisfying crack. Like Major League Baseball, this is art for the ages, not just a hit for the books nor is it an exercise in false economy.
Anyway, a good batter shouldn’t need more than one hit to put Fred’s head over the left field wall. I mean, it’s like T-Ball.
Here’s the YouTube link, since I couldn’t stand to go to H&C’s web site.
That was something. Hannity called her “brain dead” to her face! One brain dead asshole talking to another brain dead asshole (with a 3rd brain dead asshole, well, at least idiot, sitting nearby). At least H&C don’t go picketing funerals. Which, hmmm, makes me think…I’d think right-wing zealots would love the Phelps clan, because they make your everyday Christian zealots look sane in comparison. Who’s funding these people again?
I had never heard of this guy before. Unfortunately, those young girls died.
And this pig? Words fail me.
