Is the movie Phenomenon filled with propaganda for scientology? It sure is filled with a bunch of pseudo-science bullshit, but I don’t know enough about Scientology to know whether it fits their particular form of pseudo-science bullshit.
I suppose Travolta’s character vaguely conforms to what a “Clear” allegedly taken to the dianetic ideal might be, and Brent Spiner’s psychiatrist character seems appropriately incompetent, but if it’s a pro-Scientology movie, it kinds fails when the main characterdrops dead at the end
I kind-of doubt it. Remember, there was not really a supernatural explanation suggesten (even though it was outside the world of *real * reality), and no suggestion that I could see that he had any religious orientation whatsoever. In fact, the character seemed to think people sitting and talking to you about your own psychology were pretty silly. And I think that that’s what Scientology’s auditing is all about, if I’m not mistaken.
I’d say the most you could read into it would be the classic “there is greater potential in the human mind than we give it credit for!” bullshit.
Despite the silliness of its underpinnings, I loved the movie - it was sweet.
Great soundtrack, too.
