Phillydopers: Help me impress a girl!

I’m meeting up with a girl in Philly in couple of weeks, and I could use suggestions for fun things to see, do, eat and drink. (She’s coming in from NYC, I’m coming from DC. I only know a small bit of the city, and she’s never been there - which is why I’ve come to the Teeming Millions for knowledge).

We’ll probably be in the city for 8-9 hours, getting in around noon on a Sunday and leaving around 10/11 PM, so late-night happenings won’t be all that useful - but by all means, mention them if you know a great one! Otherwise, I’m looking for:

1.) Good nature/park spots in the city.

2.) Fun art exhibits - either special exhibitions in local museums, or (better) really neat outdoor “public art” exhibits.

3.) Really interesting restaurants and bars.

4.) Other wacky adventures.

In short - if you wanted to impress a girl on a Philly day-trip, what would you do?

Thanks!

I am surprised that you haven’t got any responses. I do not live in Philadelphia, nor have I ever been there. I have always wanted to visit the Mutter Museum.

The visit philly site is actually pretty great. There is an “off the beaten path” section that may be helpful to you. It’s designed for three days, but it’s all on foot, so I am sure you could just pick what appeals to you.

Have fun!

Depending on you and the girl, you might enjoy the Franklin Institute. It’s a great science museum.

I found the Fairmont Water works fun to visit. And the view from the promenade overlooking the river is impressive.

Reading Terminal Market is a great place for lunch.

The lobby of the Comcast Center is worth seeing for the huge (and I mean huge) LED screen.

Rittenhouse Square is a very simple but really beautiful little open space in the middle of the action. Fairmount Park is a whole system that takes up something like a tenth of the geographic area of the city. Under the circumstances I’d definitely say you should do some part of Kelly Drive. It doesn’t look like much will be going on at Penn’s Landing, so you can miss that. Water Works is interesting, though, but should be in the next category.

You’ve got the Magic Gardens, which some people go nutty for. I think it’s kind of cool but I like the little bits and pieces you see throughout the city better than the actual “gallery.” Worth seeing, though.

There’s also Mural Art tours, which are cool because you get to choose the focus. The love letter one is fun, but maybe you’d want to do one of the walking tours instead. I recommend one of these.

The Eastern State Penitentiary has a cool tour which I suspect might be up your alley; I leave it up to you to decide whether it’s right for the occasion. Likewise the Mutter Museum.

Depending on when this is happening, the Barnes is famous for a reason. It opens/reopens May 12. There’s also a good Van Gogh exhibit at the Museum of Art. Admittedly I haven’t been to many art museums to make a good comparison, but I’ve never been disappointed or bored by Philly’s in a dozen or so trips. The Franklin Institute is really cool but it does skew a little toward kid stuff.

Narrow it down for me. Interesting how? My favorite stuff to eat is in Chinatown, but there are some really swanky joints, dives, fantastic burger pub types, at least two spectacular Mexican places… As far as I’m concerned food is a major selling point but I don’t think giving you thirty names will help you.

At some point, though, wander into a Capogiro and just do what you feel.

There is the whole historical angle, you know, which I won’t even get into. But like the Liberty Bell is there. So there’s that.

You definitely need to go to Reading Terminal Market and walk around a little bit. That is super datey but gets back to food. There’s a Poe House if that’s your style. Since it’s a weekend, you can walk through the Italian Market on 9th. That’s food again.

Thanks for the tips, all!

Eats/Bars:
PARC or BUDDAKAN - both good food, little pricey.
The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co is a speakeasy in Rittenhouse Square, and has been a good time every time I went.

Stuff to see:
Um, it’s Philly. Historic. Also, art museums (Rocky Steps), Franklin Institute for your inner 8 year old, And a huge hippie area.

Oh, and eat @ a Chickie’s & Pete’s if you aren’t in the mood to go to Gino’s or Pat’s
