What? Hatred? Who the hell are you referring to? If me, then put in a quote from me showing were I said I hate anyone!
Bullshit. I live right here in small town USA in the south and we have at least two gangs ( one from a neighboring town) who display “colors” especially on weekends. They are not the dregs of society either, they are mostly lower class kids with no dad at home or some other shitty misfortune that they have no control over. I know because I have them in class on Monday.
Got a link that backs that statement up?
I didn’t bring this subject up in the first place but I will address it anyway. Big clothes in the fashion sense that thinksnow was refering to, make it easier to hide and bring a gun into school. That’s a fact. That’s why long top coats are banned in most schools. I don’t have a link for that I because I don’t need one. I teach in a public school. However this link is rather interesting if you care to read it.
ERIC AN OVERVIEW OF STRATEGIES TO REDUCE SCHOOL VIOLENCE
Dress regulations, particularly those forbidding clothing associated with gang membership, are increasingly popular. Requiring uniforms is thought to increase students’ commitment to school goals and to reduce theft of expensive clothing and jewelry.
While I am not for uniforms in public schools I do understand the public schools point of view on the subject.
There is much more but I just don’t have the time to relay it all to you.
Er… Those’d be the dregs, man. The dregs don’t necessarily have to be some inner-city thing.
I don’t need one. That clothing not fitting “properly” can make it easier for things to be concealed was not stated or implied originally.
I’m having a great deal of difficulty finding the statistics for violent school deaths, though I remember seeing them before. As I’m running short on time, if you can find a cite or the statistics that show any sort of rise
in violent school deaths that directly correlates to clothes becoming larger(say '92, '93?), then I’ll gladly take a look.
Lucky:
Possibly so.
I was referring to websites. One cites language from a website. I however, was asking for sites as in websites.
It’s reasuring to know that we have the language police around anyway.
Sites as in computer science:
A computer or network of computers associated with a unique identifying number on the Internet and electronically accessible, as through a browser.
v. tr. sit·ed, sit·ing, sites.
Hiretsukan:
Well you probably have a better view of the poor bastards up there where you are.
Yeah things are tough all over.
Here is a cite from a website in re columbine high:
That refers directly to my point about long top coats and my statement against any kind of uniforms.
treemae, please untangle your underwear from the knot they are in. aha had an off the cuff remark that was funny.
and 15 yr olds are not an ethnic minority, their a demographic. Ask any Record Executive or Marketing Consultant.
I am 17 years old and I know how to conduct myself on the phone.
I also know that baggy or strange clothing doesn’t necessarily a deliquent make.
Why? Because I am usually wearing baggy/bellbottom/cargo pants. In the winter, I usually don gigantic, hooded jackets that would make it quite easy for me to hide a switchblade or a pistol, or God forbid, even a BUTCHER KNIFE somewhere on my person.
The thing is, most people at my school who dress like I do don’t carry weapons. In fact, the only weapons I know of that are brought to school are pocket knives by the freaking BOY SCOUTS.
No gangs dress in “colors” at my school, and the only violence we have is the occasional fistfight. There has only once been a threat of school violence, and that was because the media decided to glamorize and overhash the Columbine killings, which made countless high school students think it’d be cool to shoot up their school.
Or at least, that’s what the MEDIA would like you to believe.
How about, instead of stereotyping all teenagers, you look at them as people.
Because studies have shown (and if you want evidence, I’ll provide it), that most serial killers are adult white males. Does that mean all white males are serial killers? No.
Not the best choice at all. If you’re lucky (and I say that as a parent), you grow out of being 15. If you’re black, hispanic, asian, homosexual, etc. you don’t. Manners are learned behavior, not instinctive, and most of you little shits don’t have any. Hell, I teach in the deep South–supposedly the home of manners–and the little shits I deal with on a daily basis don’t have the manners or housekeeping skills a pig was born with.
That said, I was the same way back in the day. It’s a function of growing up; you learn that manners oil the machine by getting ground up a few times. We old folks have a duty to open some whup-ass on the whippersnappers so they learn that acting like a human being has its benefits.
Take a deap breath, count to 10, go back and read only the words aha wrote without adding your own interpretation, untwist your panties, then come back and respond like the mature 15 year old you claim to be.
You’re showing your age. They haven’t used Spaz since we were all kids watching “Meatballs.”
Ah, the good old days when I could tell students that no absence was excused unless they had a note from the doctor or a note from Epstein’s mother. They used to laugh instead of looking at me like my Depends were showing.
Once again, hopefully in words that even YOU can understand:
Just like being black, I cannot help being 15 years old. It aggrivates me to no end that people assume that I am incapable of thinking ofthings beyond food or sex and therefore showing any civility. Nobody finds the logic of applying the characteristics of one member of a certain demographic acceptable in relationship to race or ethnic group. Why is this acceptable in relationship to age? It is not. I am not calling you a rascist. I am saying that you are applying the same faulty logic of racists to age rather than race.
Will it be necessary to go go back and edit the post for words with more than four sylablys so that you can fully comprehend the post? I am more than willing to help you out with this here.
And in the very same post you bitch about
Yeah, aha. Real mature, intelligent response.
Oh, so NOW you want me to start making assumptions. You are contradicting yourself here.
Go back and reread. Thinknow suggested that we I compare rates of violence, etc. I think that most people here would agree with me that the ball lands squarely in HIS court to provide cites. If you make an assertion, it is your responisbility to provide cites, not for me to provide cites to refute your claims.
Your own cite compared the mid eighties to 1991 and 1992, not the present. 1991 is virtually ten years ago, one of the time periods that thinknow suggested I compare current crime levels to. Unfortunately, they themselves do not provide cites; where did these numbers come from? Did they do their own research by going through thousands upon thousands of crime reports or pull them from somebody else, or just out of their asses?
On cites or sites, cites is a much more generic word, and I would accept data from printed sources, not just necissarily webSITES. I truly cannot believe that you had the audacity to correct me on such a factual matter with absolutely no support. I REALLY HOPE that you do not impose this ignorance upon your students, I can only pray that you teach nothing more than PE or some other trivial class not requiring great intelligence from the instructor.
No, I did not. I said SHE. She, as I am sure you know is a singular form of a pronoun. Since I can assure you that there are many more 15 year olds out there than this young woman, the pronoun which I referred to as a bitch for hanging up like that obvioulsy does not apply to all 15 year olds.
Now, based upon your complete lack of ability to interpret the English language, your failure to understand the concept of proof in science, and your inability to interpret the validity of cites, I can only conclude that you would hardly be a capable history instructor considering the importance of not only what is said, but WHO says what and why is so important when considering historical accounts. Again, I raise the question, what in the hell do you teach? Let us hope for the good of the nations youth that it IS PE.
Yes, and capitolized should always be spelled correctly.
And do not start off sentences with conjunctions. I thoutght that EVERYONE knew that.
What? What’s that? Are you saying all PE instuctors are stupid? I know some very smart PE instructors. Looks like you are making the same dumb assumption about them as you did about me and my pizza statement. I hope there are no PE instructors on this board that might read this last pearl of wisdom.
You’re doing it again. Your argument would fly if you knew the girl personally but you don’t so it could mean any girl. She might be one of the nicest persons on the planet but you have precluded her from being one of the nicest persons on the planet by calling her a “rude butch.” Your assumption is that, she is a rude bitch because all 15 year olds that don’t have sterling phone skills are rude bitches. Same thing as your goofy assed PE remark and the same assumption that you made about me and the pizza remark I made. You have yet to address that in an intelligent manner.
So therein lies the crux of the matter. You want to be offended by what I say but you don’t anyone else to be offended by what you say. Do you smell that? It’s called a stinky double standard.
Do you think I am making something out of nothing? Then you know how I feel.
Now in regards to my job.
First of all I have a job and I am willing to bet that you don’t.
Second of all, you have already used that insult in a prior post. Are you running out of insult material?
Third, after you get your education, then a master’s degree, then go before the state board and pass the requirements then go before a local board and satisfy them and beat out the competition you can whine about my job ok?
Because sweety, this is where you are missing the point. There ARE certain characteristics (immaturity maybe?) that, although not inclusive, are common enough for those in a certain age bracket to have restrictions placed upon them.
Drivers licenses are not issued to those under a certain age (16 years old in Utah).
The drinking age for most States is 21 years old.
You must be a certain age to purchage tobacco or alcohol.
You can not vote until you are of age.
Curfew laws for those under a certain age.
If you are under a certain age (depending where you live) you can not marry without parental permission.
You aren’t even allowed in some movies without a parent.
Please cite any law that prevents an ethnic group from any of the things listes above, except of course if a member of that group happens to be underage.
aha, sweetie? Maybe it isn’t prudent to argue with a 15 year old. I was 15 just 3 short years ago, and not only are the majority of 15 year olds not very mature, they also don’t know how to argue.
She’ll continue to compare age to race (WTF?! That’s the stupidest thing I have ever heard) and she’ll continue to insult your abilities to be a teacher. She’ll continue to make broad and general statements about other people, ages, and professions, while trying to condemn you for making a single comment. You can’t win, no matter what you do.
Right now, she’s at the age where she feels oppressed, and can afford to be VERY self-righteous, because you must remember, all 15 year olds (well, teens in general) know everything. Far more than you will ever know aha.
Now, with each passing day, I have come to realize that I don’t know anything, much less everything. One day, she will learn the same. But it won’t be for awhile. So perhaps, the best course would be to simply ignore her until then.
whew This was enlivening! Not that I’m exactly gonna spread light and understanding around either…
Manners are learned, by example or instruction. They’re just basic respect and courtesy that ease everyday life.
Toddlers, teens and adults should know that the way to answer a telephone is, “Hello, X speaking.”
The same demographic crew should know to respond, “May I speak to Y?”
The response: (pick one), “I’m sorry, Y isn’t here right now, may I take a message?” or “Yes, let me get him/her” or “There’s no one here by that name; what number were you given?”
It’s just damned sad that so many people of whatever category don’t know this. They include clanging hangups and receivers dropped with an earsplitting "Y! IT’S THE PHONE FOR YOU!" followed by dead silence.
Sheesh, we’re talking about rudeness and tackiness, and neither know boundaries I’ve ever discovered.
