Phone / Modem Problems

I’m typing this from the public library now, so I don’t know when I’ll be able to check back in. Anyway, my modem suddenly disconnected in the middle of a session last night, and I haven’t been able to get it to dial since. I’ve swapped out a modem, and that didn’t fix the problem. I’m also able to dial and receive voice calls just fine, so evidently the phone line is not the problem. So I’m perplexed. I’m running WinXP on an Athlon, though I don’t think that matters. It’s an internal modem using COM3, if that makes a difference. See if the following log files give any clues:

The “no carrier” response is the only one that looks strange, but I don’t know what it means (I get a dial tone from the modem, but it won’t dial). Another option for me now is to sign up for broadband, which I’ve been putting off (and I’d hate to do it while desperate). Judging by the people who’ve been sending me junk mail, the services available to me are SBC Yahoo (DSL), Comcast (cable), or Earthlink (both, but I think cable is rated better the last time I checked broadbandreports.com). Any recommendations? In any case, I’d still like to figure out what’s wrong with my phone or modem, though.

Thanks.
