Phone number - legal to sell?

This question came to me while reading the thread about matching numbers:

I have four identical last digits in my cell number. XXX-XXX-8888. Everyone I give it to comments on it, at least. Obviously, my number is easy to remember.

Is it possible for me to sell my number (assuming anyone could meet my price. I like my number, my price might be high)? Or does the carrier own it? If it’s an illegal practice, I’m not trying to skirt the law. I’m just ignorant about it, and I’d rather ask you guys than my carrier, because you won’t keep me on hold for 45 minutes of Muzak and commercials.

AFAIK, you are free to negotiate with others to give them your phone number or exchange it. As long as both parties agree and it’s technically possible, you can set it up.
