Photographers - How the heck do you keep it all organized?

Anybody who has more than a passing interest in photography knows that it is far too easy to accumulate massive amounts of junk…er…equipment, which can rapidly take over entire rooms if the gadget lust isn’t kept in check. Of course, things like lenses, bodies, filters of various shapes and sizes, flashes, tubes, etc., all serve very useful and specific purposes but that’s only if you can find the f*king things.

Until recently, I’d just been keeping things in various camera bags and I’d just swap items in and out to suit whatever I planned to be shooting that day. This system worked well for a number of years but, recently, I find I’m having more and more trouble keeping things organized. I’ve got a friend who has a dedicated closet and shelf space but, unfortunately, I’d don’t have that option nor do I have a lot of free space.

So, I’m turning to my fellow Dopers. I know we have a few pros and dedicated amateurs on-board so I’m hoping they have some brilliant ideas for me. What about a media cabinet or similar type of organizer? Also, what do you do with filters and stepping rings? I’m considering setting up some sort of index tray system. Thoughts?
