Physical Attractiveness: Men/Women and Work/Luck

I vote washed up. It’s a mix of luck and work for both sexes, and some people are just going to be unattractive no matter how much work you put in. (Think Steve Buschemi, bless his heart. Ain’t nothing short of serious plastic surgery and orthodontia going to make him anything but bug-eyed, snaggle-toothed, and generally squirrelly-looking. Amazing actor, but one hell of an ugly dude.) You just don’t realize how much work goes into hair and makeup and finding flattering clothes, or how much difference they truly make.

Sure he can. He can “just” get implants, the same as a flat-chested woman can.

Consider Magnus Scheving and his character “Sportacus.” Same incredibly fit body, different hair color, and more importantly, different smile.

I find Scheving himself very attractive, but Sportacus gives me the creeps. So it’s really not about the body at all.

The one you met in McDonalds.

I don’t know if citing Playboy was the best comparison. They airbrush and photoshop their photos so much now they’re only a shade more realistic than the old Vargas illustrations.

Disagree. Women can wear makeup and more flattering clothes and get hairstyles and hair dye that radically change how they look. Even simple eyebrow waxing and tweezing can change the shape and frame of your face. Men are kind of fucked; they don’t really wear makeup and their hair basically looks the same provided it’s not longer than the base of their neck. Even a 5k suit looks like shit on an ugly balding, paunchy guy. It looks less awful than a $200 off the rack suit but there’s really no hiding guy ugliness.

I suggest the OP watch 5-6 episodes of What Not to Wear. So long as thewomen aren’t morbidly obese, they look downright AMAZING afterwards. They change their hair, makeup and clothes.

Missed the edit:

ETA: Eva Longoria without makeup. Looks like an out of work barista to me.

I would post links if I were able, but have a look at some of the more recent pictures of Carrot Top.

Ripped, but, uh… still not exactly handsome.

men seem to have it easier bc while they can’t change their looks as readily as women can, most women tend to need more than a handsome face in order to find a man attractive.

Combover and platform shoes. It changed my life!

Well. Everyone’s tastes differ. Some women myguy friends think are are women I don’t look at twice. I find women very attractive that most guys think are very plain. I like small ladies, little or no breastage, big eyes and a sweet smile. And at least over 40. But that’s just me.

I find the “Playboy” look completely un attractive.

It’s all in the eye of the beholder.

As a gay man, I can say that I believe men can actually do a lot to improve their physical appearance to the point where I thought they were smoking hot, but never once gave them a second look before their change. However, I’ve seen plenty of physically fit guys who were really unattractive to me, and there’s probably nothing they could do that would make me want to be with them.

With women, they have a LOT of options compared to men. They have so much more lattitude when it comes to makeup, accessories, clothes, push-up bras, etc. The only sad part is that men expect this out of women, and it forces them into doing it if they want to be taken seriously as dateable, but most men just have to make sure they are well shaven and not too fat.

So my vote goes into the category of “both sexes can become reasonably attractive if they work hard at it, barring some really bad disfiguring things”

Well-shaven?! Stubble/light beard is ridiculously attractive to me. Although I don’t like longer beards.

I like beards, and don’t find muscles very attractive at all. I’ve occasionally declared my personal motto to be ‘never trust a guy who spends more time in the gym than the pub’.

I’ve had quite a few experiences hanging round with a bunch of other girls, where they drunkenly started ‘rating’ guys, and you know what? None of us agree on almost all of 'em. There seems to be a more standardised ‘ideal’ for women, though there’s exceptions.
For men, I think there’s a lot more body shapes and looks you’ll find a few women very attracted to, not just ‘settling’- if you look through a magazine aimed at women, there’ll be more variation in the male models than there will be for female models in a men’s mag.

Skipped over all the posts so far, but I wanted to make a point:

Getting in shape and, yes, addding some muscle mass, can make a woman more physically attractive as well. And the parameters aren’t really all that different.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned “Extreme Makeover” or “What not to wear” or any of those other tv programs that transform people into more attractive human beings! What about any of those examples? They transform both men and women, while I am not an avid viewer of these programs, from my observations I would definitely say that both men and women can be transformed.

Also along the same line, what about those weight loss shows? Like “Biggest Loser” or “Heavy” where obese people are whipped into shape and forced to lose massive amounts of weight. I believe that once any of the participants have lost a significant amount of weight they begin to look much more attractive. Once they are at their goal weight, I think that they become attractive, or even hot, not only because they are thinned but also because they are more confident.

Confidence is a large part of one’s level of attraction. They are many people who are not necessarily “hot” but are seemingly attractive because they are confident. Being comfortable with your body, no matter how it looks, is a key part of how attractive other people see you.

Also, rhubarbin: I love stubble too! And I hate long beards too, ew. (Sorry if anyone reading this has a beard)

Damn. Wish I read this before I shaved today.

I’ve read this kind of statement before. So why do razor companies keep sticking more and more blades on razors and advertising how close the shave is? Why not invent something that keeps a 1-3 day growth on your face?

Beard Trimmers

A beard trimmer is not the same thing. Or at least I’ve never considered using the beard trimmer on my shaver to shave and yet maintain a 1-3 day growth. I would think it would irritate the hell out of your face, and the angle at which you use it would be more than awkward to get around a jaw line.

Because they don’t make any money if you only shave every three days. If you did exactly what each company wanted you to you would do nothing but buy their product in perpetuity so of course they are going to encourage you to believe that the smoothest shave is sexy, etc. If you look on the gilette website they are even advertising entire body shaving as the next big thing. Part of the muscles/skinny=sexy is advertising too. Gyms, companies that make diet products, companies that make “bulk up” powders and supplements, etc. all have a vested interest in making you think that super fit is the only way to be or no one will like you. They ignore the women who like heavier guys or lanky guys. They ignore the men who like heavy women or super thin women. It isn’t financially advantageous for them to tell you that someone out there will like you for you who are even if you don’t spend your time and money on their products and services.
