I didn’t know anything was wrong with her in the first place. She’s more of a quality over quantity person, so it’s not unusual to have long stretches of time between videos, plus, she was on that submarine, so I just assumed that’s why we haven’t been seeing much of her.
Turns out she has a potentially life threatening form of Long Covid.
And here I was all excited to see Simone in the thumbnail for a PhysicsGirl video.
Wow. Thanks for posting this. I’m subscribed to both of them, but haven’t really been poking around youtube lately so probably wouldn’t have known for a while.
I remember when Simone was battling brain cancer and I think she is still dealing with it. Wishing Dianna the best. If you’re not dealing with it directly it’s too easy to forget how debilitating long covid is to millions out there.
That’s a bummer, hopefully she can make a full recovery. Or just survive.
You can still see the scar if you know where to look and her hair isn’t covering it.
When she went in for surgery, I really thought that was going to be the end of her channel. I assumed that even if everything went fine, she’d be done with youtube, at least for a while.
Hopefully Dianna bounces back just as fast.
I assume she’ll get a few mentions from the youtube science community and I feel like Derek (Veritasium) and possibly Adam Savage will spend a bit more time talking about it. I think Derek and Dianna are friends outside of youtube and I know Adam and Simone are.
I don’t know or even consistently follow Dianna a.k.a. “PhysicsGirl”, but I have a close friend who suffered and ultimately died from ‘long covid’ effects, dying from a stroke many months after a relatively mild SARS-CoV-2 infection even though she was healthy and had no pre-existing conditions or health issues, and know two other people will persistent COVID-related issues. This feeds into my frustration with people who insist that the pandemic is ‘over’ (despite a lack of empirical evidence that this infection is beyond the epidemic phase, and in fact current hospitalization and death rates would indicate epidemic conditions relative to comparable established diseases like Influenza A) and even more toward those who would suggest that SARS-CoV-2 was never a problem.

I think it is safe to say COVID is endemic now.
I keep seeing people saying this but there is zero evidence that this is actually a seasonal virus, and a leading epidemiologist agrees with that assessment:
I know a virologist and epidemiologist (Ph.Ds in both fields, publications in leading ID and virology journals, has worked with the CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service, works at a world-recognized university research laboratory) who is convinced that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has the ability to manifest an order-of-magnitude increase in virulency. Whether that will actually occur is a question (epidemiologists have been arguing that this could occur with various strains of Influenza A for decades, with a couple of ‘false’ warnings that turned out to be not as virulent as predicted) but certainly the closely related SARS-CoV(-1), if it had not been contained and with an infection fatality rate (IFR) of 9.5%, could have easily exceeded that projection.

That’s awesome. She looks…well, she looks like she’s been in bed for a few years, but she looks a lot better than the last time we saw her.
She had a genuine smile on her face and you can still see the old Dianna in there. I assume she still has a long road of rehab in front of her, but maybe we’ll get to see more of her in the future.
Looks a little more like Kristen Schaal now. Which isn’t a bad thing at all!

There was a video a few months ago where they mentioned she was going to try a new treatment. She definitely looks a lot better than she’s looked in years. Very good to see.

Really happy she seems to be getting better. I hope she will (someday) return to making her great videos.
