Pick the Republican team (P and VP) most likely to succeed in '16

One reason the Democrats have such a lock on New York is because the Republicans run candidates who are so conservative (at least by New York standards). People like Pataki, Giuliani, and Bloomberg show that a Republican can get elected in New York.

Like that would be a problem?? Just “donate” some of the campaign funds to a “housing for the needy” cause. Bingo. Rubio, welcome to Tennesee!

Which would prevent him from running again as Senator from Florida in 2016.

I’m with the John Mace. Kasich/Rubio is by far the most broadly appealing ticket.

Probably because that’s not in the Constitution. Both in the original and 12th Amendment, it merely says that the electors must select either the President or VP from another state. If Bush/Rubio ran as a ticket then the Florida (and only Florida) electors would have to vote for someone out of state either for president or vice-president.

As forgiving as residency rules are I doubt it would pose a problem as long as one of the candidates isn’t currently in office. Jeb could claim he lives in Connecticut or something.

More likely he would move back to his father’s old homestead in Texas.

Actually, if Bush is the nominee I’d bet on Tom Cotton as his VP pick. Actually, Cotton will be a short lister for any moderate candidate. He’s as conservative as Ted Cruz but not as ambitious, plus the military service looks good on the resume.

Yeah. For instance, Cheney switched his residency from Texas to Wyoming after he selected himself as Bush’s running mate.

Forget Kasich. Not only does he have the charisma of a wet dog turd, he doesn’t offer a good age contrast to the Democratic nominee. Forget Rubio. He’s stuck in the Cold War with Cuba and after six years still hasn’t articulated an alternative to Obamacare, plus he looks like he should be president of a high school chess club, not of the US. Forget Carson. Once you get over the “Oh my God! A DOCTOR! And a black one, too!”, you’ll see that other than being a skilled technician in one field, he’s a blithering idiot. For my money the ticket to fear is Walker-Fiorina. Walker gets the Teabaggers and is prepaid by the Kochs, Fiorina gets the women who can’t stand Hillary.

This may be a whoosh, but Rubio is already retiring from the Senate.

Not a whoosh - i was thinking of the Leiberman precedent. I also wasn’t aware he wasn’t seeking re-election - didn’t see anything in the wiki article on him about it?

I agree with John. Kasich-Rubio would be a great ticket for the GOP, for the reasons he stated.

Kasich is very moderate by modern Republcian standards. He’s joined Ralph Nader on some issues, supported Obamacare back when it was Kasichcare (though I assume he hates the Kenyan version now with a passion). He even supported a ban on assault weapons. Yes, the GOP base would prefer a lunatic, but, if Rubio does a good enough job playing the fool, the adults in the GOP should be able to get voters to hold their nose long enough to pull the lever.

The Constitution might not actually prohibit the Pres and Veep being from the same state, but the restriction is still significant enough that no party would ever run two from the same state, especially not a fairly large state like Florida (or Texas). That’s just asking to end up with a President and Vice President from different parties.

Though, as mentioned, the workaround is simple enough.
EDIT:

Actually, he’s one of the very few Republican governors who hasn’t fought implementation of the ACA. Which is in fact where most of his reputation from moderation comes from.

No love for Walker / Ayotte or Walker / Haley?

Not going to happen. The worst possible message the Republicans could send to women voters would be nominating a female Vice Presidential candidate after the Democrats nominate a female Presidential candidate. It’s basically saying “We don’t give women the same respect the other party does.”

So… perfectly plausible then?

Do you really think Walker has more charisma than Kasich? And charisma is great to have, but Hillary doesn’t have it, so it’s not like Kasich would be running against Oprah.

As for Florina… my first thought is Wicked Witch of The West. All that’s missing is a pointy hat.

Teabaggers adore Walker. Nobody adores Kasich. Fiorina is running for veep, if she can win another kiddie table debate she’ll have some claim to it.

If Rubio gets the nomination, his short list should be moderates from not-South to balance th ticket.

Brian Sandoval
Charlie Baker
Rob Portman
Kelly Ayotte
