And then one day things weren’t quite so fine…
"NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) – Hurricane Lili became a major hurricane Wednesday, reaching Category 4 strength on the Saffir-Simpson Scale by early afternoon.
Lili’s maximum sustained winds ripped across open water at 135 mph. The National Hurricane Center warned that they could strengthen even more today and tonight.
The approaching storm has residents bracing for the second round of tropical weather in a week."
Goodbye Isidore, Hello Lili.
Quite a racket the end of the hurricane season is making along the gulf coast.
Category 4? Shit, today’s paper said it had just reached Hurricane status. I hope it doesn’t hit New Orleans, I’ve read what would happen should a major hurricane make landfall there. Essentially, 9/11 with worse weather.
We have Dr. Neil Frank here that used to be with the hurricane center and even he, on the news last night, only said that maybe it would be a three or low 4. This gal’s strengthened quickly.
As mentioned, Louisiana is still drying out from last week’s storm. It let New Orleans know just how poorly they’re prepared. Now that they’re sopping wet, here comes a bigger, more concentrated storm.
Even if the winds are greater, hopefull the amount of rainfall will be less. I think old New Orleans is what, 8 feet below sea level? It exists only because of US Army Core of Engineers levies, dikes, etc.
"Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters found flight-level (10,000-foot) winds of 156 mph in Hurricane Lili this afternoon, indicating Lili continues to intensify. It now is an extremely dangerous category four hurricane. Lili continues on its relentless course toward the U. S. Gulf Coast with landfall expected sometime around midday tomorrow in southwest Louisiana. The first outer band of heavy squalls associated with Lili is now about 40 miles south of the southeast Louisiana coast. Near and immediately east of where the eye crashes ashore tomorrow, a life-threatening storm surge of up to 15 feet will roll through the bayous. Destructive winds with Lili will carry some distance inland, especially over Louisiana, southeast Arkansas and western Mississippi, so residents of those areas should prepare for widespread power outages and blocked roads tomorrow afternoon and evening. Isolated tornadoes will add to the danger. Along the coast, east of where Lili moves inland, surf will come up significantly, and a heavy surf advisory has been posted as far east as Destin, Fla. Surf may build to 10 to 15 feet.
I’ve been through 5 hurricanes (Bertha, Fran, Bonnie, Dennis and Floyd), 2 of them major (Fran and Floyd) in 3 years. They aren’t that bad, just long, very severe storms, with a lot of flooding. Though none of the ones I went through were Category 4s.
And I was reading this thread right as my mom told me that my dad had sent me a news article regarding Lili. Weird.
And yes, my thoughts and prayers go to all in the path of the storm.
I don’t think it’s coming here, and I hope it doesn’t. Unfortunately, that means wishing it on someone else, and poor New Orleans (where li’l sis lives) just had Isadore last week.
I just saw it was downgraded to a tropical storm. Whoever it hits will get wet, but I don’t think it’s going to be too bad. It’s bright and sunny here today, and I was at least expecting a little rain.
