Indeed. It says something about the Dope demographic that the moderators feel this is a real risk for images.
The pearl clutchers just love to pretend they are protecting us. I’m a member of about 5 or 6 other boards that allow pictures. I have never seen tub girl or goatsee on any of them. And some of them have members that are a lot less sophisticated (shall we say) than most members here. The suggestion that those images are “inevitable” is ridiculous.
For the record, I don’t care either way about pictures, it’s no sweat off of me to click a link (which you will notice never lead to tub girl, as you would expect if these porn-posters were as rabid as suggested by some of the above posts). I just wish we could have reasoned discussions of such things without all the hyperbole, paranoia and bullshit.
If my understanding is correct, to see pics you would need to check that option. The default would be no pics so no bandwidth problem.

No, on a few of the other boards I belong to, images are on by default. You can turn them off in your 71st CP. But I assume the admins can set one or the other to be default.
Inline images are also active in Tapatalk. I’ve never perceived any problem.

I happen to agree with running coach (post 3). The possibility of abuse exists and the mods can’t be everywhere 24/7. I assume that the mods at other boards also remove/block objectionable pics before the members are subjected to some asshole’s idea of a good time. Claims that someone hasn’t seen something at another site doesn’t mean it was not posted there. It could have been (repeatedly) posted and then (repeatedly) removed.
The powers that be have their hands full without having to deal with pics. Their choice. Those who wish to view goatse, tubgirl, etc., can view it elsewhere. There is absolutely no reason those pics have to be seen everywhere.
You are, of course, free to spend your time on these boards of equivalent quality that allow images and avatars.
I hate to break this to you, but there is nothing special about the Dope. Just because it happened 15 years ago, doesn’t mean it will happen today. A lot has changed since then.
The fact that this type of abuse doesn’t happen on boards much bigger and more popular than this one is evidence of that. And yes, they are corporately owned too.
The greasemonkey script for avatars stopped working for Chrome, though – at least for me. Anyone got a solution? (Apparently now Chrome only allows “Chrome official extensions”)

Besides, the more people complain and fuss about it, the more likely it would be that trolsl WOULD try it.
No shit and I have. And you’ll note, I didn’t say we HAVE to have pictures – I’m pretty much indifferent to it. But the idea that “oh my, we’re so much better than the REST of the internet” is stupid. Don’t want pictures? Fine, whatever. But can we quit with the snobbery here? THAT’S what pisses me off, not the lack of pictures, or avatars. It’s like the whole, “But we’ll attract the WRONG CROWD!!!” You can’t honestly think attitudes like that are what makes this a better place. :rolleyes:

Since those rules were put into place, the instances of such language being use is rare. So I have no reason to believe if TPTB put up a rule stating “No nudie pic” it won’t be followed.
If they had to moderate images as well as words, we’d have to double their pay.
Out of curiosity, why do you come here? Despite your denials here, it’s clear you want to have avatars. Why not spend your time somewhere that has them? I mean, if this board isn’t better is some way, why here?
I really don’t get this attitude. I think as far as general-interest message boards go, this is simply the best one I’ve run across. And I do think part of that is that we don’t have avatars, pictures, etc, which tends to attract a crowd that is more interested in the text part of things. I like that. To me, it makes a better board. Maybe others think it makes for a worse board. Then they go elsewhere. That’s fine - we each get what we want.
I, too, am a member of other message boards which allow pictures. And I also have not seen a significant amount of abusive use of them. I have, however, seen that they tend to lead to what might be called a less mature look and feel. There’s nothing offensive, per se, in someone replying to a post by posting an animated GIF of Captain Picard smacking his forehead. And that sort of thing can be fun, in the right context. But it’s not a good fit for the culture of this board.

Just make posting an image a perk of paid membership. That would pretty much control the trolls. Keeping the board safe from tub girl has to be pretty trivial since other, far bigger, corporate-owned boards don’t have a problem. It’s a stupid argument.
