Because there are way too many members on this board that can’t be bothered to look at pictures.
And the explanation ends with…“and that’s why we can’t have nice things.”
Basically, the possibility of abuse. The mods aren’t always here to get rid of objectionable materials instantly and people don’t want to see goatse, tubgirl, etc.
Doubly so the ones at work.
No, the certainty of abuse. Pictures were allowed in the very early days of the board; you’ve already worked out what happened.
It’s not simply that the pctures may be objectionable. Many of us here appreciate the clear crisp appearance of a board that relies on words alone. Pictures can be linked if so desired but we don’t really need them thrust upon us willy-nilly. There’s enough of that elsewhere on the web.
Correct. We have the option to post pictures but it has been turned off in all forums except Marketplace*. The reason is because of the possibility (or rather the inevitability) of abuse. Trolls and spammers will be sure to post objectionable images. Better to just allow people to link to images off site.
*Images are also turned on in the cornfield. It can be quite jarring to be checking a spam post that’s been moved there and be unexpectedly confronted with graphic porn.
Now you’re just teasing us.
Pictures would be nice. Charts help fight ignorance.
Wishlist:
The board has been cautious with software upgrades, which is all to the good. But in the indefinite future, this might work:
Only paid members can post pics.
Actually only paid and approved members can post pics. Approval involves 3 months min membership. And evaluation.
Oh yeah, and all pics are previewed in a particular space by mods, who have to check off on them. So it might take a few hours for your pic to come online.
Watch where the pic links to! Because it might get swapped out! So pics can only originate from approves sites, not your home server.
Watch out for gifs! Because they might be animated! With a long time delay! So you see a chart for one minute, then pr0n the next! Also other animated image formats!
Even still, members should have the ability to turn off pic loading, without digging into menus. It should be a button on every page.
Caveat observet.
Abuse of pic posting privileges would be subject to notes, warnings and instabans.
Much of this is automated with top quality, reliable and bug-free software.
…or posters could just load the appropriate Greasemonkey script.
Because that could lead to…avatars! We couldn’t have that!
I’m on several boards that allow pics, none have the “tub girl” problem.
Except that you already have one, Mr. Pittsburgh Sports Fan. [If you run a certain program…]
I’m not buying the “abuse” excuse. Fark allows pics in their threads. And their median maturity level is much lower than this place. AND they have more members.
You must not have seen this place when images were allowed and not confined to one forum.
It’s the outliers that are the problem.
For some reason I thought the biggest concern was load on the server as well as slowing down thread display rather than worry about NSFW pictures.
When has this place ever allowed photos? If you’re going back to the pre-21rst century days, internet tech has changed quite a bit. I don’t think you’d have the same worries.
Sadly, said program no longer seems to work on Chrome. At least for me. Oh well. And that’s MS. Pittsburgh Sports Fan.
Besides, “whoosh!”
Cuz we prefer the one thousand words to one picture. It helps separate the Internet wheat from the chaff.
Free Republic allows pictures, but they generally don’t post them. What does that say?
I mean, allow them or not, but c’mon. This whole, “WE’RE more superior to the rest of the internet” attitude is bullshit.
15 years ago?
This too.
Anyway, there’s a greasemonkey script that will turn image links into inline images. Works pretty well.
Isn’t now about the time that someone comes in to whine about no avatars?
It’s not just what happened 15 years ago. This place is a troll-magnet. You really would need something like I described above to head off problems (though maybe not to the same extent).
There is also the valid issue about whether we would want this board to host meme-fodder such as this, this or this. It’s not the end of the world. But it has a different feel than what we do here.
Charts are great though.
