This just came out a few days ago, and I just watched it. I have a question about the plot that was devised by Nick Harp, specifically, what was supposed to happen.
Major spoilers to follow.
There wasn’t supposed to be a gun involved. However, Jasper was secretly colluding with Nick to take over the company after his father didn’t die? What was their plan? How was an exploding die pack (?) supposed to leave Jasper in control of the company? Neither the dad nor Andrew were supposed to die, and I think that Jasper was the youngest, so how did they figure that Jasper would be left with all the power after whatever was planned for Oslo? Did Jasper just figure that his 2 (older?) siblings’ involvement with the group would disqualify them from taking over the company?
In case anyone came here looking for a recommendation: Rotten Tomatoes gave it 47%, which I think is pretty fair. It’s not terrible, but it’s not great. I thought it moved very slowly. It’s fine, but there are better shows out there to watch.
Minor spoiler: Also, I tend to like “secret bad-ass” type stuff, like In From The Cold. This is not really of that genre.
Wife and I watched ep1 last night and enjoyed it. It moves slowly? Not the first episode! But ep1 was about establishing the general plot line; maybe it slows down after that.
Haha, sorry, I’m watching with my wife and she doesn’t like to binge-watch as a rule, so we’ll probably watch one a day or so. I’ll pop back in if there are things mid-season worth discussing; otherwise we’ll probably be done with it in a couple weeks.
I like Toni Collette, going back to Muriel’s Wedding, where she plays a complete fool who is nevertheless sympathetic. Since then, she’s revealed herself to be quite versatile, can be glamorous or homely, but not afraid to look bad and can be counted on to get the essence of a charactet right. Which may be why she seems to pop up in a lot of series lately, being the consummate pro.
This was a typical run for her. One of those shows that strings you along, where you have to guess what secrets are being protected and only gradually do the pieces fall into place. I thought the weakest element was the gang of radicals, who seem to have come from twenty years earlier, especially Nick and his Manson vibe. And the woman playing a young version of Jane simply didn’t look or sound right - that’s often a problem of course when you have to cast two people to play the same role, you can never have a perfect match but this one seemed to miss the boat entirely.
I also don’t get what the suitcase full of money was about, and why Jasper would kill to get his hands on it. It might be evidence, but I don’t see how it could point to him - what did I miss?
Apparently, at some point they collected ransom money for the kidnapped professor. Along with the money was a mini audio tape of Jasper and Nick plotting for Jasper to take over the company once his father and oldest (?) brother were out of the way. [This is the part that I don’t understand. Since nobody knew that the dad was going to be killed, I don’t understand how Nick and Jasper thought that things were going to go down, and how this would result in Jasper being in sole charge.] As far as anyone else knew, Jasper was not involved with the cult/movement in any way.
Of course, it seems to me that, if the tape had come out 30 years later, he could simply say “that wasn’t me”, and IDK how anyone could prove that it was.
The whole thing goes dead whenever Colette isn’t on the screen. The woman who plays her daughter sucks the life out of any scene she’s in. She has negative screen presence.
Oh I beg to disagree. Bella Heathcote did a fine job as a woman forced by circumstance to take charge. Now her character didn’t always play it smart - climb into the trunk of a car driven by her dangerous pursuers? Not recommended.
I only saw her in one previous movie, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”, which is better than it sounds.
