Pineapple and Jell-o

As a kid in South Africa, I remember eating pineapple-flavored jelly (yes, in proper English, it’s “jelly” not “jello” - but it’s the same stuff!). I don’t remember the brand name, though.

It isn’t “jello”. One particular brand is “Jell-O”.

As to “jelly”, I prefer to be able to distinguish between pectin-based condiments and gelatin-based foods.

“Jello” has entered the common parlance as a generic for gelatin. It’s not as ubiquitous as “kleenex” or “xeroxing”, but nearly as much as “pop tarts”.

Think “jello shots” - you surely don’t believe people only mean “Jell-o brand gelatin shots”.

Welcome to the Straight Dope Message Boards, harddavid, glad to have you here.

When you start a thread, it’s helpful to other posters if you provide a link to the column you’re commenting on. Saves searching time, and helps keep us all on the same page. No biggie, you’ll know for next time, and I’ve added the link at bottom of your post. (By the way, that column is from 1974.) And, as I say, welcome!

It seems to me that pineapple-flavoured Jell-o does exist, though…

Pineapple JELL-O*!

CMC fnord!
*All caps appears to be Kraft Foods preferred “spelling”.

Yes! Just like that. Thanks, crowmanyclouds.

Pineapple Jello is best made in 1 ounce cups with Malibu Rum.

Then again, that article is from November 29, 1974. There probably wasn’t pineapple Jell-O at the time.

And I’m sure it sets up just fine, since the pineapple flavoring would contain no bromelain, the “meat tenderizer” enzyme which would be the culprit for actual pineapple preventing gelatin setting properly.
