I’m not sure if they’re commonly referred to as “blue” or “red” huckleberries, but I grew up with California Huckleberries all over the place in Humboldt, and they’re certainly not the same species as your grocery store variety blueberries. They’re related heaths, yes, but not the same thing.
There is an organic farmer in my hometown who is very successful at growing domesticated “pick em yourself” blueberries in the same area that California Huckleberries flourish in the wild. I love wandering the rows and filling my basket when I’m home and they happen to be in season. I also love me some home-made California Huckleberry pie or jam, but you really have to add a lot of sugar. They’re a lovely (though tart) snack by themselves out on the trail too.
Here’s a not very good picture of red huckleberries , here’s the blue huckleberries , and last the blueberries .
Thanks
I just realized that there’s no fruit in the pic from the wikipedia article I linked, but here is a decent enough picture of the California Huckleberry.
