Pink Lemonade, or things you just never thought much about.

Today, at lunch, I ordered lemonade. Hubby said he likes pink lemonade better. I asked him what he thought was in pink lemonade that made it different than regular.
After a few moments’ thought, he said, “pink lemons.”
I know I shouldn’t have laughed at him. Maybe I shouldn’t have said “food coloring.” But, I did, now he’s sulking in the only air conditioned room in the house.
I’ll go apologize in a few minutes.

I don’t know what makes it pink, but a few brands do have a difference in flavor between the pink and the yellow.

Oh dear, I almost hate to quote this but:

 Bolding mine.

My mom made pink lemonade by adding maraschino cherry juice (i.e., food coloring!). I’m sure I couldn’t have told the difference between pink and regular in a blind taste test. But who cares? It was pink! It was special!

OTH, my brother-in-law despises garbanzo beans, so one day, when he was happily shoveling down pita chips and hummus, my sister and I asked him if he knew what hummus was made of. He paused for a minute then answered, “Dough.”

Variegated Pink Lemon

Pink Flesh

Well, lemons are citrus fruit.

Grapefruit are citrus fruit. Grapefruit come in white, pink, even ruby red.

Oranges are not always orange–blood oranges and raspberry oranges are much more red than orange.

Why shouldn’t lemons come in pink?

(I’d have laughed, too.)

ETA: My niece went through a spell when she wanted pink blueberries. Given that she was 2 or 3, we weren’t quite sure whether she was referring to a different type of berries, or just wasn’t clear that except for unripe blueberries, blueberries are usually blue.

Red huckleberries are related to blueberries. In fact, blueberries and blue huckleberries are geneticly identical. (I’ve been told.)

picunurse, there are pink lemons and Wiki says they’re used sometimes in making pink lemonade. The rest of the time a red juice (cranberry, cherry, raspberry etc) is added to make it pink. Pictures of pink lemons

I was gonna call bull shit on that, but apparently, you are right

I could have sword I read somewhere that marashino cherry juice was grenadine, but everything I’m reading says that it’s almond flavor.

Grenadine is pomegranate syrup. Or it is supposed to be. ETA: did some reading, and apparently Rose’s grenadine is basically HFCS and colors/flavors.

I managed to make myself allergic to blueberries a couple years ago when I picked, cleaned and jellied a couple gallons in the wilds of Hood Canal The only difference between the blueberries and huckleberries were the huckleberries had shiny skins, while the blueberries had “dusty” skins. The bushes looked the same.

Squink, jsgoddess, elfkin477 and Eureka, thank you, I learned something today. Of course, now I have a large plate of crow to eat. I’ll hide it under the pineapple on the pizza Hubby ordered. Of course I don’t like pineapple…

Was the pineapple yellow or pink?

picunurse, my first impulse when I read this post was to point out the truth behind pink lemons, but I see others corrected you much more nicely than I would have. I hope you gave your husband a good apology, and I hope he was a good sport about it.

When I was younger, we made our own lemonade with real lemons and honey instead of sugar. Sometimes we would find the pink lemons for a good enough price and would use them. I never knew that pink lemonade (outside of the pre-packaged crap that all tastes the same if you’re colourblind) was made with anything other than pink lemons. There is a decidedly different taste to them. Thanks to others’ posts in this thread, I now know why I don’t like anyone else’ pink lemonade (made with grenadine? ICK!)

Did anyone else notice anything…odd… about the second image on the second row?

Second image on the second row of elfkin’s link is this, which is… just leaves. Whoosh?

Also, I’m dying to set up my own lemonade stand now…

I’m not sure if they’re commonly referred to as “blue” or “red” huckleberries, but I grew up with California Huckleberries all over the place in Humboldt, and they’re certainly not the same species as your grocery store variety blueberries. They’re related heaths, yes, but not the same thing.

There is an organic farmer in my hometown who is very successful at growing domesticated “pick em yourself” blueberries in the same area that California Huckleberries flourish in the wild. I love wandering the rows and filling my basket when I’m home and they happen to be in season. I also love me some home-made California Huckleberry pie or jam, but you really have to add a lot of sugar. They’re a lovely (though tart) snack by themselves out on the trail too.

No, but I was surprised how often “Eureka” showed up on the page of images.

I worked at a fast food restaurant for a couple of summers. The pink lemonade there was yellow lemonade with fruitpunch added to it. Many mornings would start with the phrase “What color pink lemonade do you want today?” It would vary from a pale pink (refered to as Mary Kay pink) to hot pink (usually called Barbie Doll pink))

i’ve never been so disappointed with a link titled “pink flesh”.
