People who live a ‘hippy’ type life, or consider themselves hippies have been shit on pretty bad around here lately. I am considered a hippy, and I consider myself a hippy, if that means loving and respecting the Earth and its inhabitants. Its not just long hair and beards, love beads and Grateful Dead music, burning draft cards and smoking grass…it is a mindset, a way of life.
Agree? Disagree? Who in here is a so called hippy? (and I use the term loosely)
peace,
JB
I’m not, but some of my most respected friends are. Live on a farm, grow organic veggies, go to retreats with other women, eat vegan, etc. Love it. They have rich lives.
I don’t know who thought “hippie” was an insult. I don’t think so. I’m too suburban and consumerist to be one, but I admire from afar.
Check out the “here comes the pseudo hippies” and you’ll see hippies called dangerous and anti-American and everything in between. Speaking as a hippy, I am not anti American, just pro freedom and anti-war. What’s real scary is the ‘kill them all and let g-d sort em out’ types.
peace,
JB
[scent of patchouli] Well, I’m not a vegetarian and I don’t live in a commune or out of a van. I haven’t smoked pot or dropped acid in a while. I’ve only attended one Grateful Dead show. I love the United States of America. I only own 2 tie-dyes and one dashiki. I bathe daily.
However, I’m deeply into Peace/Love/Freedom: these 3 things should be top priority in any decision, personal or global.
I believe drug laws cause more harm than the drugs themselves (ditto with prostitution/gambling).
Musically, the 60’s still reign supreme.
I am a tree-hugger.
Turn-offs: conventional religion, party politics, racism, sexism, homophobia, neckties.
I dig herbal tea and incense.
You’ll remove “far out” from my vocabulary when you pry it from my cold, dead tongue.
Serenity rocks.
Pseudos, beware: “hippie” is NOT spelled with a “y.”
I guess I’m in.
[/scent of patchouli]
I was born too late to be a real hippie. And I spent my formative years in the Reagan Era, which left some ideas that I’m afraid are going to need surgical removal.
I think the polite terms for people like me is “centrist.” But most people just sneer and say “geez, how do you walk with that damn fencepost so far up your butt?”
[sub]FWIW, I was born in 1967, right in the middle of the Summer of Love, so I do have some of the hippie in me…[/sub]
Well, I listen to folk music, don’t shave my legs, and vote Democrat… does that make me a hippie? I also like tie-dye clothing and have been known to drool over clothes in the Gypsy Rose catalog…
Well, I could never kill another human being, panzermanpanzerman, so I dont know what good I would be in a war. But I think I would risk my life to free other people. Does that make any sence?
And, would I go to war to defend American freedoms? A freedom is a freedom is a freedom…I dont think country of origin has anything to do with it. But, right now, I dont think ‘American’ freedoms are threatened by anyone other than the US government.
peace,
JB
I can’t really say that I’m surprised to find you here spewing the same nonsense that got you blasted out the pseudo-hippie thread over in the pit. Do we really have to do this again? You were unable to defend your position over there, why do you think that things will be better over here? How’s 'bout we both stop hijacking this thread and let them get back on topic?
LabRat: What nonsense are you talking about? And about getting ‘blasted’ out of the pseudo thread in the pit, I defend my opinions as elouqently as I can, but sometimes I no longer have the time, the patience or the need to go on, so I stop. I like to stay out of the pit, I dont like to be insulted. I try not to insult people, and the few times I have on this board I have apologized.
But this is a new thread about people who consider themselves hippies. I am not here to defend anything I said in other threads. I am here to have fun and here from other ‘hippies’ So if you dont like this thread, you have my permission to not view it. I promise I wont take it personally.
peace,
JB
Well, if it absolutely came down to kill or be killed, I’d probably kill. But, modern war is complex and the people shooting at each other are not really enemies: they are pawns of those in power who are fighting over money, ego-driven pride, and/or vengeance for the actions of a few psychos who watch the whole show from a safe distance.
If anybody wants to argue about this, take it up in Great Debates or the Pit. This is a peace-loving thread.
Freedom? Well, true freedom is found in the mind/heart/soul of the individual. *(see meditation, self-actualization, free-will philosophies, Revolution by *The Beatles, etc.)
Hippies unite! Or not. We’re rather unorganized critters.
TN*hippie, can you be my hippie mentor on the SDMB? Does that sound lame? My Mom is my hippie mentor IRL, and I think she might be Willie Nelson’s love child. Go figure.
peace,
JB
