So let’s say I wanted to set up a server farm outside mainstream law. Yes, it would probably track torrent movies, and have many links to sites that might host files from the shady side of the internet or link to a poker game, just so I could break even.
What little polynesian countries are left? Anywhere else? Maybe a former Soviet Republic, or some crazy pro-trade Chinese city-state?
[sub]no, I’m not in it for the money, I’m just curious[/sub]
This was a large part of the plot of “Cryptonomicon” by Neal Stephenson. I got bored about 50 pages in and never finished it, but the main character is trying to set up a data haven in the beginning.
I’m thinking that going offshore might be a good option - a ship with several sattelite dishes that’s in international waters.
You should have finished reading it.
This in some ways reminds me of the “Can I start my own country?” type of question. At what point does a country, principality, island nation, abandoned offshore oil platform, etc “cross the line” with actions that become so reprehensible that some other country (or countries) decides it must be invaded?
Not that I’m saying Darth Nader has any intention of pursuing such a course of action. However, some disreputable people might decide that such a “server farm” would be a terrific place for plotting terrorist activity, exchanging sensitive information (nuclear launch codes), etc.
