Pirate Master 6/14: "Bribes, Lies, and Vengeful Eyes"

Welcome to week 3 of the chimeric offspring of Treasure Hunt and Survivor. Will Captain Joe Don continue the booty split of Captain 8 shares, Officer 2 shares, Pirate 1 share, losing team zilch? Will the crew decide that they’ve had enough of the show’s standard Cruel Shelf policy and either deliberately sabotage him or call a mutiny? Will any of us care?

In last week’s preview, we see the bosun spreading his comparatively meager wealth around. Whom is he buying support for? Who will stay bought, and who in true piratical fashion will look out for their own main chance?

I predict this is the week Joe Don is cut loose.

I wish they would have just made this a new season of Survivor. Survivor out in the water would have really invigorated that show.

While we’re waiting, here’s an article (kind of annoying popups) that demonstrates just why scientist/dancer John was the first one booted off.

John, on being a scientist: My last position before I left for Pirate Master was with MIT in the quantum electronics laboratory. Right now I’m on my own, I’m trying to find a way of generating a new challenge… In today’s world, it’s a different kind of place, and people like me need to find new challenges and ways to synthesize things together and come up with something that answers to nobody. The world hasn’t seen the last of me, but this is going to be a brand new experiment.

John, on how he’s smart enough to know where crocodiles live: *This is kind of like general synthesized knowledge. It’s osmotic, I guess. *

John, on stealing the compases: It’s not just what the compasses are, but what people think they are. I just pushed it in such a way that I made a suggestion and told them what it was and just had to hope that nobody would come up and say that doesn’t matter. I wanted to say it in such an authoritative manner that they thought they were being forced to do something – the same thing that brought them into a position of subservience to Joe Don.

OK, I like Azmyth, but I can’t tell which is more ridiculous: that hairdo or that accent.

I will have more to say in the morning (my brain is fried because Scuba_Ben turned me into an online gamer, ye scurvy mongrel! ), but every week I am more and more impressed with the challenge design on this show. Those treasure hunts are hard and kind of super awesome! I wish I had applied for this show.

I would cockpunch Azymath or however the hell his dumbass parents spelled it, if I thought for a second he had one. How can a single human being possibly manage to be that thoroughly and iredeemably annoying? We need to import a Fast Forward stat, send his sorry ass to India and shave his head.

If Louie laughs at one more of his own jokes I may have to jump through my TV screen and beat him to death with Azeemoth’s dreadlocks, except that would necessitate my touching his nasty dreadlocks.

All praise Captain Azmyth! Or, it’s about time that someone got a clue.

I give Azmyth props for changing the booty split to Even (Winning Team). As any good pirate knows, pay improves morale.

I give Azmyth more props for showing up to hand out the Pirate Court summons, something Joe Don never did.

But I had a phone call and missed the first half of the treasure hunt - what happened with the bamboo trap?

(In other news, Rockle is turning into quite the pirate herself. And Rockle, that’s Senior Officer scurvy mongrel to you!)

Apropos of nothing … somehow I managed to become a Neophyte/Ultimate poker player. Figure that mess out, I double-dog-dare you.

(What? I told you all it was “apropos of nothing” … gawsh!)

Wow! Not two weeks and you already have an Ultimate standing! Congratulations!

(For the rest of you: In Puzzle Pirates, skill ratings are on a comparative basis. A skill rating of Ultimate is the top rating group, and entitles the player to bragging rights, challenges, and prestige.)

The Red Crew was through it and triggered the trap, but the Black Crew was in large measure in the trap area and a Crew member was able to brace the bamboo sufficiently to allow the rest of the Crew to pass it without too much of a delay.

I’m sick of these people who compare themselves to pirates in real life “I’m a pirate, in a van.” “I’m a pirate with makeup.” “I’m a pirate prosecutor” (especially that one. She doesn’t understand at least one of those jobs)

These people are all awful.

I was really pleased when Faux Probst said to Captain Sideshow Bob “Wait - you have an accent now?” At least he finally got a clue and dropped it at Pirates Court after fading it in and out a few times. I think the hunky cook did the right thingby saving the DA. Fashion girl was worthless. And she’s a dead ringer for some actress, but I can’t quite remember her name. Anyone? Bueller?

Here’s a thought: How would this show change if, in violation of a cardinal rule of competition reality shows, the format was non-elimination, or double-elimination? I’m wondering if the show might be improved by making it more Big Brother on a sailing ship instead of the current concept.

Eh…I’m finding myself watching through the challenge and treasure division, then pretty much ignoring the show until the person is actually cut adrift.

On one hand I think Azy had a good idea to keep everyone happy by divying up the loot equally. On the other hand, Joe Don is sitting on $45K and still on the boat so even though he was a greedy bastard, they didn’t get rid of him. So why exactly do you give away a huge portion of your loot? I would have been more straightforward…“Look guys, I’m going to give you each another grand out of my winnings, but since being captain puts a huge bullseye on my back to be cast adrift, I’m going to keep a good amount so that I walk away with something”…I don’t think anyone would have hard feelings if you did it that way.

I think the show has a good concept, I just think they need to refine it a bit more. I don’t like that the challenges so far have all pretty much been a foot race. Got a slow member on your team? You’re screwed. I do like the fact that you have a chance to get some cash even if you’re not the “Pirate Master”. Joe Don is walking away with a nice chunk of change.

I like the show much better when Joe Don isn’t captain. Azimuth (purposely spelled wrong) is a good name for a ship captain. The fully even split surprised me, I figured he’d share some, but didn’t expect that much. I think cutting loose Alexis was the right choice, she’s a death sentence for whatever team she gets stuck on, and the captain needs to win treasure to maintain his captaincy.

Side Note: One of the ads I’m seeing is for a company that does tall ship sailing where you’re allowed to take part in running the ship (Rannoch Adventures). Sounds like it could be a really cool experience similar to the show (minus the pirate thing).

I wonder: what power does the Captain actually have? Could Azmyth, say, order everyone to hand over their previous winnings, and then equitably redistribute the money among everyone? Or could he order J.D. to give up, like, half his money to the rest of the crew? And in that case, would Jay have to surrender the money J.D. gave him as bosun? Would everyone else have to give up their $200 or whatever that J.D. gave out from his previous share? Arguably, that money wasn’t won. Also, what if the Officers said “Hell NO!” and kept their original cut of the treasure – what would happen then? I hope we find out, because that? Could be interesting.

I’m digging this show (for being bad), but I want more pirate attitudes. For example; on the challenges, they wait for the slowest person. Wouldn’t a pirate just leave them behind? As a unit, you are only as fast as your slowest person, but if you cut them adrift, you can move much faster. And it’s not like they’re going to care when you bring back some money for them. We haven’t seen anything in the rules about that, but I think it would be a more exciting challenge.
And the end of the show is sooo boring. After the speeches, I can TiVo the last 5 minutes of Faubst and just see who gets cut adrift. Maybe they should get a last word to the crew… Looking forward to seeing more.

I think all members of the crews have to stay within a certain distance of each other.

I think the winner is the team who fires the pistol first, and possibly, all team members need to be together to fire the pistol. But this has never been explained to us, the viewer.

There’s a lot of members on this board. Ask around; maybe somebody’s done something like that.
