Going to see Pirates of the Caribbean tonight. All the reviews I’ve read have been good-to-very-good, with the exception of the Salon movie review. But Salon never likes anything. I’ll check back into the thread with my thoughts when we get home.
I just got home from seeing it actually. It was funny, full of action, it looks good, and it’s just plain cool. Johnny Depp makes this movie but Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom are good as well, I highly recommend.
I’d be careful taking young children to this movie though, two mothers left with their young children (who looked less than thrilled at the prospect of leaving). Of course children differ in their maturity levels but I’d have to say, leave behind anyone under, say, 10 or 11.
Although it may not really be rated Arrr, this marks the first film released by the Walt Disney Company to have a PG-13 rating under the Disney banner (as opposed to Touchstone, etc.)
I really, really liked it, but Orlando Bloom got blown out of the water by Johnny Depp, who was just hysterically funny. He stole every scene he was in, and after about half the money, I was making plans to buy the DVDs. Plus, you know—Johnny Depp in eyeliner. Also, Geoffrey Rush kept his pants on. And the heroine was not irritating at all. A pleasant surprise all the way around.
I went for Johnny Depp, but stayed for Orlando Bloom in the cape at the end. ::faints::
But seriously, the movie was overall good. Kick-butt good, in fact. I fully intend to see it as many times as I can afford and then buy the DVD when it comes out.
I found the heroine to be rather irritating, but I think I may be the only one. I’m not sure quite why, though…
That was the most fun I’ve had watching a movie since, well…I can remember! As neat as I found The Italian Job and as creepy as 28 Days Later was, this steals the show by far. I’ve never seen much of Johnny Depp, but he was incredible!
That was easily the most enjoyable summer movie yet (I love 28 Days Later, but it doesn’t really count as a summer movie since it’s foreign, has no effects, and is too intelligent).
Pirates of the Caribbean should get Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Actor for Johnny Depp-his performance as Jack Sparrow absolutely stole the movie. My favorite line in the movie was
when he and Orlando Bloom were fighting, and Depp slices open a sandbag to blind Bloom.
Bloom: You cheated!
Depp: Pirate?
I also enjoyed Jonathan Pryce’s comic turn as the heroine’s father, the Governor of Jamaica.
However, I do think the movie’s pace could have benefited from some judicious editing.
I just to have to say… I can’t WAIT for this movie to make its way over here. I haven’t seen so much as a preview but it sounds fantastic (I hadn’t even heard of it til I couldn’t resist the temptation of the thread title anymore).
I give this movie two thumbs up too. Johnny Depp just blew me away with his performance. I saw him on Inside the Actors Studio last week and he truly is a one of a kind. I didn’t stay for after the credits but I heard there was something? Did anyone see? Oh and I don’t think I’ll be going to see “Haunted Mansion” Next thing you know Disney will be making “Mr Toad’s Wild Ride - THE MOVIE”.
I at first thought that the idea of Haunted Mansion would make Ol’ Walt roll in his grave/urn/ice block/whatever*. But then I remembered he wanted to make a film about Kruschev trying to get into Disneyland (somewhat based on a true story!), so I don’t really know what to think.
[sub]*Yes, I know he was cremated. But that still doesn’t make a frozen Walter E. any less interesting.[/sub]
thank god I’m hearing good things about this movie…
To tell the truth, I love pirates; almost as much as I love the Undead(walking corpses, skeletons, zombies, etc - I am a horror fan if you can’t tell :p) When I saw the previews I saw a gangly skeleton foot of sorts. Is there a horror theme at all? Is it all sorta like, funny pirate action? Hopefully both. Can’t wait to see this movie.
Saw it last night and it’s possibly the best movie I’ve seen all year. Sadly Orlando Bloom didn’t have much of a character but everyone else was a character and a half, so it worked out mathematically.
Best bit (paraphrased):
Sparrow: What are you doing? Why are you burning everything? Why are you destroying the food? Why did you destroy the rum???
Miss Turner: You see that signal fire? It reaches 1000 feet into the air and can be seen for miles. You don’t think the entire navye is out searching for me! We’ll be rescued in no time!
Sparrow: …but why did you destroy the rum???
This is going to be such a kick-butt dvd, too. Bruckheimer productions of late like Pearl Harbor and Blackhawk Down have been getting fantastic treatment on dvd sets and hopefully this will be no exception.
