I found the entire experience enlightening, if nothing else. AdAware is my new favorite piece of software. Try the following experiment, just for kicks. In you IE Internet Options | Security settings, tell IE to ask you if you want to accept Cookies.
Wow! What an eye-opener. Everyone in the whole world wants to install Cookies on my machine!! It’s fascinating.

If you have a mac, try icab–it comes with advertising blocking built right in.
