Yeah, I’m talking about those stupid Internet ads that always appear on my Yahoo! page. I bring my cursor down to click “inbox” and some stupid-ass Willie Wonka ad unfolds over all my options.
I HATE that!
Does it bug the f@ck out of anyone else, or is it just me? And, is there any way to make them go away?
Eventually it will go away, but the best bet for beating them is to use something other than Internet Explorer. Microsoft seems to like these special things, and goes out of it’s way to invent more. Pop up and pop under and mouse over and swimming… all those required some support to get started in the first place.
so anyway, IE is the last one of the pack to build in a blocker.
Alternative browsers, Opera, Netscape, iRider etc. will be the first to add blockers. They never get money from those ad suppliers, but Microsoft is heavily into placating advertisers.
I use Netscape, and I’ve never seen any of these things mentioned. I block all cookies except where they’re needed, all pop-ups of every kind, flash presentations, sound and all ads. Every time I see a new one, it goes into the filter. After the first time, I never, ever see them again.
Netscape is free. AdBlock is free.
I use IE 6. I have no problem with ads. The instant an ad appears on the page, I find out where its coming from and block it via one technique or another. You’re only a victim if you choose to be. It takes maybe 5 minutes to de-adify a site and then it’s clean for a few months until they reprogram it.
Other browsers might make it easier to do comprehensive ad-block, but the assumption that MS is in cahoots with the advertisers is probably bogus. What they are is: still the default browser that advertisers write their code for. Many ads are “blocked” simply becasue the programming to put them on the page malfunctions on Mozilla / Opera / etc.
All right, LSL, help me out here. I know how to USE a computer, but I’m not a whiz by any means.
I freely admit that I’m surfing from my work PC. That means I’m using IE. I have no choice and I’m not allowed to download any other software. How do I block ads? I seriously don’t know how to do it, so if there’s a way, I’d love to know about it.
scout1222, if you’re not allowed to download and/or install anything on your work computer, your options are extremely limited.
Do you have a USB flashdrive for your computer? If so, you could download Portable Firefox onto your USB drive and run the program from there. It’s totally contained on USB drive and doesn’t require any installation or changes to your computer. Just plug it in and you’re good to go. Firefox will block 90% of the popup ads out there, but you can also use the adblock plus extension on the USB drive to block things like banner and flash ads.
I have Firefox, Thunderbird (email) and UltraVNC (remote connection software) on my flashdrive so I can access my email, bookmarks and home computer system from any computer with an internet connection. Very handy.
Hodge, thanks for trying, and I suspected that I didn’t have many options. I use Netscape at home, and the pop-up blocker works like a champ.
My IS department is pretty finicky about what it allows us to do on our network. If I have a thumb drive or portable device of any sort, it must be “approved” by them, or else it won’t be allowed. (I don’t know how they do that, but whatever) I certainly could circumvent their instructions (and I’m sure there are people here who do) but I think the IS department is a good group to have on one’s side.
Anyway, thanks for the attempt. I’m just tired of always hearing that I’m an idiot for not downloading the newest coolest browser. In this situation it’s just not an option.
