I plop down in front of my computer. I’m just itching to read email, check out my eBay (items I’m selling~ whoo hoo!), and BOOM!! Twenty different pop-up ads swarm the screen all at once! click click click click click click= me taking them off as soon as they swarm. Is it me or is it RIDICULOUS? I almost enjoy TV commercials now, compared to the utter hatred that swells within me for pop-up ads. WTF with the swarming ? I’ve never been the recipient of spamming, thank God, but DAMN! Stop it already, Satan. Enough pop-up ads, pleeeeeeeease! I think it’s a plague, I swear. Satan, get thee out of my hard drive!
You might have a spyware program running in the background. Check out this site for links to software that can detect and remove such junk.
If the ads are being generated by the websites you’re visiting, try installing Mozilla or the new Google toolbar.
Thank ye, thank ye… I do hope this works. Pop-swatter wasn’t doing anything for me. Down with pop-ups!!
We use Pop-Up Buster here. Sometimes I have to shut it down, cuz it won’t, ferinstance, let me click on a link to another SDMB thread. But, when I’m opening a site I know has a lot of pop-ups (like Ebert’s reviews), I always activate it.
The pop-ups that are really, truly the spawn of Satan himself, are the ones where you have to search the whole freakin’ ad for the “close” button.
If you are lucky enough for them to actually have a close button.
Pop-up ads are simple torture and demonic advertising.
Wouldn’t know, really – I use Mozilla, which suppresses them quite well.
But I hear from friends, who are still using that Micro$lop Internet Explorer, that these are real annoying and a real time-waster.
I use Microsoft Internet Explorer. I also use Pop-up Stopper Pro. Works better than the popup stopper on Mozilla, in my experience.
Another satisfied “Pop-Up Stopper” user. If you use IE, the (free) Google toolbar includes a good pop-up blocker.
I recently got a new computer and I had to use IE while I downloaded and installed mozilla. I was truely astounded by the number of popups around. I assumed they had simply died out since they no longer became profitable. I had no idea mozilla was actually blocking them so effectively.
Pop-ups are intrusive advertising. On the advertising scale of general sliminess, they rank just below scenery-destroying billboards on the freeway.
Another vote for the Google toolbar here. I installed it last week, and haven’t had a pop-up since.
I use Proxomitron. It not only kills pop ups, but the various banner ads, etc, that appear on webpages as well. (I also recommend AdAware and Spybot.)
Tucker, if you have done noting else in your life, you have done a great service to the Dopeworld for spreading the gospel of Proxomitron.
Just kidding. Not about Prox, but that you have done something else.
Only caveat is that it requires minimal programming skills. Very small amount.
I wouldn’t call it programming skills. All I had to do was follow the simple instructions on setting it up and it’s worked perfectly ever since.
I think they are demonic torture. That’s why there are pop up blockers.
I’d like to know who clicks or visits a pop up ads site. Anyone here ever do it?
My IE chose to die a short while ago (took LOTS of other Microsoft products with it too…). It forced me over to Netscape (which I hear is Mozilla with a different skin…) I love it! Now I’m free and clear of Pop-ups, the bane of internet enjoyment. -Cue Amazing Grace- “was blind but now I see”
A good program to get rid of those naggging pop ups is ad-aware.gets rid of any harmful spywear and more!i recently had to doun load this program to get rid of some pop ups and never had one since…Its free too
I hate to break the news, but the SARS of all popup crud has arrived.
