Pit Bulls (continued)

I almost got eaten by my mother’s Lab, once, when she said “get him!” The only thing that saved me was that a) the dog didn’t realize it was me (ma said it as a joke, not realizing the dog didn’t know it was me) and b) I yelled “It’s me, Duke!”, and he recognized me in time.

Duke was an attack Labrador. So was the next one she had. It’s actually quite easy to train one, if you want one.

I am.

I was surprised. Posting someone’s Facebook page is all kinda stalkerish.

I would own one that had undocked ears and tail because then it would be a Stealth Pitbull. No, really, they just aren’t very cuddly. Their heads are like velvet-covered rocks. And the way they smile makes them look retarded. I prefer a dog with a thick, protective coat, a noble brow, a natural sneer of superiority, and lower canine teeth that stick out so they can disembowel people and other dogs without slowing down, like a Rough Collie.

My pibble girl is now about 8 months old, 45 pounds. She is the first short-coated dog I’ve ever had and I LOVE it. (I always shaved my Goldens and Cockers) For two big reasons: she can get in the bed with me and not leave a boatload of fur in it, as well as on my hands and up my nose, and the super-short hair allows her body warmth to come through, she’s like a living breathing hot water bottle. Even her feet are hot.

I have also learned that she, as a pibble, is the ideal cuddler dog - I wasnt’ sure if what I’m about to describe was just her individual personality, or a fairly common feature of the breed, and I’ve just in the last couple of days heard it’s a common breed feature.

The reason she is such a wonderful snuggler/cuddler is due to her powerful need to be touching me, first of all. It doesn’t matter how, she’s just incredibly attached and tactile, so as long as some part of her is touching some part of me, she’s golden.

Secondly, and this is really a huge first for me, the touching is all she wants or needs. By which I mean she has no apparent interest in being actively petted or stroked, so when she gets in bed and gets next to me, I don’t have to persist in petting her to keep her comfy and mellow. I pet her because I like to, but she doesn’t seem to care and when I stop she doesn’t react. She doesn’t nudge my hand or give me a pleading look to get me to start again. She just wants to be next to me. So when I’m freezing my ass off like I was last night I can reach for her and hug her hot body to me like a pillow listne to her soft, steady breathing in my ear and we can both go back to sleep, content. It rocks.

And her ears are big and floppy and adorable.

Trimming your post to address this bit…I love this, too! I have two pit bull mixes and this is so true. They will just snuggle up next to me in the big comfy chair and be content. I can still work on the laptop or knit or whatever and they (well, one at a time - it’s not that big of a chair!) will just be snuggled up next to me, completely content.

Here you go TomNDeb

This week alone, 2 adult women were killed by pit bulls. One just died yesterday near Seattle:

http://www.kirotv.com/news/news/woman-attacked-pit-bulls-dies-her-injuries/nbkPX/

Note that she was from Vietnam - her USA GI husband met her during the war 42 years ago.
She survived the 1968 Tet Offensive in Khe Sanh
but not the 2013 Pet Offensive in Seattle

“They’re really nice dogs. They were raised with a family, with kids.” Quezada also tellingly said, “I just want to say I feel really sorry about the people. And we’re going to fix things, you know.”

How do you fix a dead woman, Tom?

Then, just 24 hour prior:

http://www.digtriad.com/news/local/article/304738/57/Sheriff-Woman-Killed-By-2-Pit-Bulls-In-Kernersville

a 25 year old woman was killed while feeding 2 pit bulls, that she and her bf had raised from puppies. Investigators said Atkins had been around the pit bulls since they were puppies and there was “no history of problems or aggression”

The UK press has photos:

and just another 24 hours prior to that:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-city/north-baltimore/bs-md-fatal-dog-attack-20131103,0,7380820.story

a wheelchair bound woman was killed by her pit bull that she loved and raised since it was a puppy.

Baltimore animal control returned her pit bull to her after it mauled her twice previously: Officials said they do not have special rules for pit bulls, noting that any breed has potential to bite. No mention was made about the landmark Maryland Court of Appeals ruling in 2012 that declared pit bulls “inherently dangerous”

Douglass’ daughter Tamathia Davis said other family members did consider this animal a threat and pleaded with animal control not to return Boosie, a 4-year-old male pit bull

Davis said the dog first attacked her mother about two years ago, biting her face so savagely that “whenever my mom would open her mouth, her cheek would open with it.”
Well, TomNDeb, thats 3 adults killed by pit bulls in the last 3 days. How far back do we have to search to find a similar streak? Hmmm. Would you believe in the past 2 months, it happened twice?

3 toddlers were killed by their babysitters pit bulls in one week, just over a month ago, the same month a 90 yr old man was killed in his own backyard by his neighbors pit bulls.

BTW - any animal will cry out when trapped in a house fire. That hardly defines them as being a hero. Nice try.

Pits have killed 25 of 27 people who perished in USA canine attacks in 2013 (so far). That’s 92%, Tom.

If you are implying that in two hours the dog will be hungry again, that is fucking sick!

How’s that work out as a percentage of all Pit Bulls kept as pets in the US?

How’s that problem of verifying breed ID coming along, too?

I’m so glad this thread was resurrected, I’ve been without useless antidotes for far too long.

I have two rescue pit bulls.

Our beloved baby kitty Toby died unexpectedly a week ago tonight.

Neither of the dogs killed it. In fact, our girl pit, Lola, always tried to lick him but her tongue was as big as his head so it squicked him out.

Every time Lola has found me crying uncontrollably this week, she has jumped up next to me, climbed on my lap, put her front paws around my neck and licked my tears away.

I’d trust her to do that 1000x more than the shitass little dachshund I grew up with, who just like at least two of those pit bull attack examples, mauled a friend’s face when she moved to pick up some food that the dog thought was close enough for him to want to protect (it was on a coffee table).

Lola.

Duke.

Our late, beloved Toby.

Toby and his buddy Duke.

Shayna, I’m so sorry.

Thank you, Guinnie.

I’m so sorry about Toby, Shayna.

Your Lola sounds an awful lot like my Sonny. He’s very sensitive to when I’m upset and always comes to comfort me.

Such beautiful poochies and kitty. Sorry for your loss. Our dog (pit bull mix) is like that, too. If anyone is upset or crying, he comes up and cuddles up and licks tears away.

Stoid - my guy is similar in terms of physical contact. He’s not necessarily one to beg for belly scritches, but he likes to plop down next to you, and firmly press against you before laying down.

Firmly, you say? I’m absolutely sure that Zusje is capable of actually doubling or tripling her mass at will, triggered by my attempts to move the covers. Suddenly she magically goes from 45 pounds to about 145, without even opening her eyes, and I am trapped exactly where she wants me.

I’ve started pulling up my right knee to prevent her from taking a spot that effectively binds me to the mattress with my covers, and she does something even better instead: she curls up on the pillows next to my head, like a cat, and about half the time she uses the curve of my shoulder as her pillow. Which is delicious.

The short hair really changes the sensual experience of touching a dog in a way I never anticipated. It feels much more like touching a person, which is very cool. It’s a vast distance from what I’m accustomed to; this is my third “couple” of dogs, the first ones were blonde cocker spaniels, then a pair of Golden Retrievers, then Preston, who is like a cross between a shepherd and Border Collie. No more fluffy stuffed-animal style dogs, I guess… (the velvet-covered rock description is perfect!)

She’s also very different and challenging in her personality. But adorable.

For my fellow pibble lovers, I though you’d enjoy this dog. I find him ridiculously charming… an absolutely flawless blend of pibble (with coloring like my Zusje) with Basset Hound. I swear they should make it a breed! He’s to die for.

Hey, hey! Watch those quotes. That’s me, not cougar58!

Oh holy smokes! That’s cute!

How funny. I just found that about an hour ago while looking through some examiner.com articles for some reason. He is a cutie!
