Shayna: I feel for you. It’s the price we pay for the amazing gift they are to us…
I’ll admit it. I have watched both Pitbulls and Parolees and Pitboss. Does that make me liable for pitbull attacks?
Probably. I should throw words like “nutter” and “land shark” your way, I think.
Sorry, I’ve known some nice pits, but…
I don’t think there’s any surprise to fighting dogs being implicated in a disproportionate amount of attacks… they’re fucking fighting dogs.
Why do fighting dogs attack their own people? My WAG is that dogs regard people as their own, and fighting dogs have literally been bred to attack and kill their own.
I’m not saying its just pits either, frankly any breed that has been bred for killing is more likely to attack IMO (it’s what they’re made for), hence people complaining about aggressive terriers.
But a dog that whose breeding was manipulated to select for its capacity to kill other dogs is just some other shit, come on now. A dog fight ends when one dog either quits or is too fucked up to continue. So fighting dogs were built not to quit, and to be the dog that fucked the other dog up too badly to continue. What did people think they were getting with fighting dogs other than that? They are what they were made to be…
I don’t want some kind of pit bull genocide, or taking peoples pets away, what I would like to see is selective breeding enforced in the other direction, towards docility and ultimately just breeding out fighting dogs entirely. Restrict who can own fighting dogs, breed, and which dog can breed with which. And figure out a better way in general to keep dogs out of the hands of crappy owners. Not everybody gets to have a dog.
Since this is a BBQ pit let me throw a pre-emptive fuck you to the any individual (a strawman but at least I’m honest about it!) who wants to froth at my opinion or call it cobbled together, yours is too shithead, all of ours are, that’s why we all only get one vote.
And fuck the people who created fighting dogs… it wasn’t right to deliberately optimize a life form for killing its own, assholes.
TLDR: Anything that’s been bred specifically to kill its own kind just isn’t right. Time to breed them out, sorry (seriously).
Typo in first line:
It was 3 women killed within 3 days this week, not 2. My post references links to all 3.
Glad you quoted the whole post, in case we missed it the first time.
Thank you, Rhiannon. I’ve just been devastated. He was only 3 1/2. He seemed lethargic on Tuesday after trying unsuccessfully to cough up a fur ball. I took him to the vet on Wednesday after Petromalt didn’t help. The vet found his breathing strange, took x-rays, saw a huge shadow in his chest cavity, sent us immediately to the emergency vet where he had nearly two cups of fluids drained! He stayed overnight for more tests, saw an internist, oncologist and cardiologist and was found healthy in every aspect (heart and blood work were perfect), but there was an unknown mass that had collapsed a lung. He went into surgery where the doctor found it was scar tissue, probably from something he accidentally aspirated, successfully removed it, found no damage to his lung, which pinked up and expanded immediately. They took him off bypass, he was breathing normally, doctor started stitching him back up to send him into recovery … and he arrested. They think his newly working lung threw a clot to his heart. They performed CPR for nearly 30 minutes. I still can’t believe he’s gone. It’s like it’s all been a really bad nightmare.
Thank you, Stoid. It’s the price, I know, but this one seemed pretty steep. I’ve lost cats before: one who made it to 22 years old, one who was born with severe internal birth defects, one who showed up on our doorstep already sick with cancer (he was an adult cat who’d clearly been someone’s pet because he was fixed and seemed perfectly healthy otherwise, so he’d had a good life for some time by the time he showed up at our house). Those all make sense. This one doesn’t. I’m still in shock this even happened. This might give you a smile, though: I’m wearing his “Cats for Obama” collar around my wrist to keep him close to me.
Please excuse the hijack. I now return you to your pit bull-bashing, but leave you with video of our vicious attack dog in her debut performance, “Kisses in the Air.”
My apologies, as I must interrupt you with yet another child killed by the family pit bulls today, the 4th pit fatal this week:
Levi Watson, 4, of Bradford, Arkansas is the 376th American killed by pit bulls
the little boy’s older sister left several comments on Facebook posts naming the attacking dogs as pit bulls. “It was 5 pits. That was my little brother. His mom left him outside with them and he got attacked,” writes Chelsea Watson. “Never in my life did I think my baby brother would be gone before me.”
The police just confirmed they were pit bulls as well.
from his older sisters Facebook:
“My brother’s passing of being killed by the 5 pit bulls in Bradford will be on the news … keep the prayers coming PLEASE!!” - Chelsea Watson
Chelsea says the pit were in a “5 to 6 foot electrified fence” enclosure, and were owned by " her brothers brother.
How many, pit deniers? That’s 4 in a week. Will you throw in the towel and admit the obvious ? when its a sustained 7 humans killed a week?
How do you explain the breeds’ apparent nationality preference?
Blah blah blah.
They weren’t the family’s pit bulls; they belonged to the person whose home they were visiting. There were three dogs, not five.
The dogs were outside and nowhere near the child … until the mother lost track of where her 4-year-old was as he wandered outside without her even being aware.
I’m sorry for her and the tragic loss of her child, but if she’d have been paying attention to him as she should have been, he wouldn’t have put himself in harm’s way. He might just as well have wandered out into the street and been hit by a car. Would you be demanding we abolish all cars then?
Hardly. You just have a hard-on for pit bulls.
I had a friend in junior high who was severely mauled by three Alaskan Huskies. He damn near was killed, and his injuries were catastrophic … he lost his penis in the attack. Where’s your thread about vicious Huskies?

All but two of those are non fatal; one was a German Shepherd this year, which is one of the only two non pit fatals in 2013 (26 of 28 by pits) - the other you had to go back three years for (2010).
You have just reinforced my point.
cougar58, go back to your home under the bridge!
Process of elimination. In the UK, where Staffordshires originated, they are banned, as well as dozens of entire nations and provinces. Bermuda Denmark Ecuador Malaysia Norway Puerto Rico Venezuela all ban them, and many more heavily restrict them.
“We would if we could” is the motto of pit bulls.
FYI an man in Italy was killed last week as well - the pit bull bit his nuts off . No joke. I only track USA fatals.
Like I said before, I guess everyone needs a hobby.
What, precisely, are you claiming is being denied? What, precisely, are you implying no one is admitting?
Your story on story will never substitute for scientific proof that pit bulls are radically different from all other domestic dogs in how their brains work, causing them to behave in ways that are virtually unknown in other dogs.
You are the denier. Of the reasons why.
Enough with the anecdotes, we need data.
This link is to a report prepared by my government.
See page 13 for pure breeds and page 17 for cross breeds. Pit bulls are over represented in attacks for their population in both sets of data.
Fight my ignorance, can someone explain why?
Asshole owners who want the “tough” dog du jour and raise them wrong? But I think we’ve been through that repeatedly.
Daughter has an English Bull Terrier and an English Bulldog/Basset Hound mix and has trouble finding an apartment because of the “bull” in their breed names, thanks to asshole owners and overly-cautious landlords. My own property insurance policy is more specific.
My heart goes out to your daughter. Volunteering at a shelter and doing pit bull rescue, I hear all the time about people who can’t find homes or apartments, or who can’t get homeowners insurance, because of the breed of dog they own, even though their own dog has never bit anyone or shown any signs of aggression.
This week at the shelter we had several German Shepherds and a Malamute surrendered because their owners couldn’t find living arrangements that allowed them to keep their dogs. This, of course, along with the numerous dogs that fall into the “bully breeds” category who were similarly surrendered.
