I think the best thing to come out of this is the concept of “Defensive Doxxing,” where you prep a case-file you can use to doxx someone just in case, and that makes you sane and rational and a good poster.
Wait, he’s being banned for lying about details of his personal life? That’s a banning offense? I thought the normal punishment for that was merciless mockery and dragging.
If that’s what happened here, why for the love of God are we still doing this - we have a poster who is an obvious troll, who everyone hates except for the other obvious trolls. Do the mods ban him for being an obvious troll? No, this behavior smolders for years and years, degrading the quality of discourse, and then he gets banned for some penny-ante bullshit.
This teaches trolls (or really everyone) that they’re free to pursue obvious low-intensity trolling for an extended period of time, as long as they keep their story straight and avoid certain bright-line triggers.
Thanks to the mods for moving quickly once he blew up, and a big bucket of mazels to the posters (@ASL_v2.0 in particular, @wolfpup as runner-up, but several others as well) who put in the time to make the case and prod him into his self-righteous implosion.
It’s weird: I’ve been here forever but he didn’t pop up on my “ew, gross” radar until the whole ‘acceptable casualties’ mass shooting debacle.

Even in the extremely unlikely event he’s being truthful about his practice of proactively obfuscating his biography to avoid identification, it’s ironic that he accuses this board of being full of “mentally ill” people when he himself is displaying a volcanic degree of paranoia.
Also, considering his obsession with the board, I’d like the over-under on the number of days before he’s caught trying to sneak back in under a new name.
Yes, apparently that’s how we mod long-term trolls around here. Been a pet peeve of mine for a while now.

I’m glad someone posted this. I ran across it a few days earlier but decided against posting it because I assumed it wasn’t likely to be him since this guy is in Sarasota.
But since Martin freely and openly admitted to lying about where he lives…maybe it is him.

Depends on the severity, and the trollishness with which you do it, I guess. Other posters have been caught out in white lies and not banned. But that’s a different kettle of fish from completely lying about stuff like military service to win arguments, I’d warrant.
The Announcement thread in the ATMB will be fleshed out later. There was more to the decision (quite a bit) but that was the specific rule violation that the banning built around.

That thread is an announcement. You’re certainly free to raise a thread on the more general issue.
It’s also worth pointing out that this thread is an example of the best possible use of the Pit re: internecine squabbles. Martin isn’t the first long-time asshole to lash out as a result of a deserved putting and earn an overdue ban as a result.
I rarely stray into the pit and, when I do, I lately try to talk past the pitee rather than directly confront them. I’ve decided that it’s fruitless at best and - at worst - damaging in a “wrestling with pigs” sort of way. I generally feel that pit threads, like funerals, are more about giving everyone else an opportunity to express negative emotions.
This is a case where the ban only came about because several posters weren’t afraid to get muddy. It’s nice to be wrong.

I’m probably giving myself more time in metaphorical purgatory for this, but F*** it, it’s worth it.
When I posted about M_H’s prior pit thread and my reaction to his troll-thought, it was because he basically said everyone (on and off board) who was complaining about duration, frequency, and volume were prone to ““exaggerate””. (Direct quote, and yes, he used scare quotes). And that we all needed to “get over [our]selves”. This was in the paragraphs before the section I quoted upthread where he out and out gives vent to his internal hideous little troll.
But in the same fireworks thread I responded to him thusly -
