You can interpret that as him calling us all homosexuals and transgender, or, he’s just using mental illness as a lazy insult for the people pitting him. The implication being that only a mentally ill person would pit him.

To be honest, 3 days is fairly fast for a long time poster. The offense in this case was pretty blatant.
Board moderation acted as swiftly as it could and is very much appreciated that it did. But it was clear to many of us a long time ago that this poster was a net negative to the board–and that’s justly not a bannable offense.
You did him a favor, seems like. I’ve never for the life of me understood why some people deliberately choose to associate themselves with an institution or a society that they consider morally contemptible or beneath them. If I thought the SDMB was morally or cognitively not good enough for me, and was mostly representing “contemptible” positions advocated by people I despised, I wouldn’t hang out here.
Of course we all have to interact sometimes with individuals or institutions that we consider ourselves too good for, but for whatever reason can’t totally sever our ties with. But recreational participation in anonymous messageboard discussions is practically the definition of “voluntary association”. Why would anybody put in a sizeable proportion of twenty-plus years of their one precious life voluntarily associating with a group of people whom, in the aggregate, they despise?
I don’t understand it, but quite a few conservatives seem to have that mentality. For some reason they enjoy the feeling of moral superiority produced by consorting with those they consider their moral inferiors? So like I said, you could argue that it’s really doing them a favor when the despised institution reciprocates their contempt and steps up to do the ties-severing on its own behalf.
What actually made me kind of sad when I was looking through those old posts I quoted was the realization that for years the SDMB was enabling such a hostile environment for valued posters like Johanna and Una_Persson, so that posters like Martin_Hyde could indulge their “freedom of speech”.
I haven’t been following this - any chance of a quick synopsis of what happened?
Thanks. What a freakin’ tool he was. Hopefully he can find a community where he doesn’t hold everyone in contempt; but the problem will be that whichever community he lands in, he and his issues are gonna be there.
