So the guy Jack is really a chick, right, but I don’t think that this little secret is relevant to any plot in the movie, which brings me to ask; what the hell was the point then of him/her masking his/her identity?
I think we’re supposed to see that Riddick is able to ferret out our deepest, darkest secrets. He could smell her bleeding. Also, it gives him a sort of father figure appeal later when he says “don’t you cry for him, don’t you dare.” Murderer with a heart of gold sort of thing.
I think the girl was just a tomboy, I don’t know that she was actively trying to disguise herself.
I didn’t think Pitch Black was as bad as everyone else did. And of course, that’s for obvious ‘jarbaby is a pervert’ reasons…but I also thought it was a neat concept.
And I liked that Riddick didn’t ever really ‘reform’ in that movie.
I think the girl gave specific reasons for asking like a boy, so I think she was actively trying to pass as male. I never thought she was a boy to begin with, and the “revealing” of it confused me at the time…
jarbabyj, you should be happy to know they are going to make a sequel, “The Riddick Chronicles”.
I still don’t understand what the point of that whole thing was. I thought maybe it was some weird riff on the old wives tale about animals (the monsters in this case) treating women differently when they’re having their period.
It remains one of the sillier, more pointless parts of a movie that I really like a lot - for pretty much exactly the reasons jbj said. I also thought the monsters were really cool. It was a low-budget movie, but they did a very good job with what they had. Eh, I think I just love cheesy sci-fi…

…but at the end of the movie when the girl-boy asked what to do if they (the survivors) get caught, Riddick answers “Tell them I died somewhere on that planet”, which I took to mean that his former self did die and Riddick is a changed man.
I hope your kidding 'cuz that movie was not scary or entertaining, IMHO.
Heh heh. Once I wrote a problem report at work that supposed to say “such-and-such shuts during overload…” Well, the ‘u’ and the ‘i’ are right next to each other… So with a little fatfingering it read “shits during overload…” Still haven’t lived that one down.
I think that the reason they made “Jack” a girl was to continue with the theme of plot twists that put everyone in greater jeapardy. That way, they could keep the “are they gonna make it and who’s going to get eaten next” suspense up.
I haven’t seen it in a while, but as I recall “Jack” herself states that it’s safer to travel as a boy; people don’t hassle a lone boy as much as they do a lone girl. I took that statement as a sign that the disguise was entirely deliberate.
Beyond that, I agree with Tuckerfan; I think they made her a girl to up the “we’re gonna be eaten” ante.
