John Nance Garner is credited with saying that the vice-presidency was not worth a pitcher of warm spit (or p**s)? Who first recorded that he said it?
So far, I can only suggest that Garner used the phrase while speaking to Lyndon Johnson sometime after he(Garner) left office 1940 and Johnson took office 1960. I would think biographies of Johnson would be a great place to look.
The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations gives it as “The vice-presidency isn’t worth a pitcher of warm piss.” Source: chapter 11 of O.C. Fisher, Cactus Jack.
O.C. Fisher published his book about Garner in 1978. There are many cites/sites which indicate that the phrase was told to Lyndon Johnson by Garner before Johnson became Vice-President. So keep looking.
Maybe someone should send Liebermann a pitcher of warm piss to make him feel better…
