So, what gets me here DerekMichaels00 is that the above I think is the only really pittable offense of iiandyiiii in your op. I mean if it were true, which I don’t think it is that given that even you use weasel words - i.e. almost follows. Stalking on a message board is irritating, but in this case I think you both just frequent political threads in Elections and GD.

I personally don’t see any indications of genuine stalking meant to harass. But if there were, it would at least be a legitimate gripe. But the rest of it…

He’s one of those who says that calling Obama “polarizing” is “racist.” Tries to use the no true scotsman argument whenever someone points out how weak on radical Islam jihad Barack Obama is. And on every single issue, he takes the liberal side, be it foreign policy, race relations, you name it. He also is one of those who always defends Islam, but never any other religion.

I’m generally left of center, I have some positions left (abortion, LGB rights, economics, environment), some positions right(foreign policy, worldview), and some dead-center, like race relations and police. The always-to-one-side stuff isn’t what I expected from a site like this.

…seems to all boil down to iiandyiiii not agreeing with you politically. Worse from that last line what you really seem to complaining about is the overall board culture not agreeing with you. iiandyiiii seems to be your proxy for a rant about the board’s liberal-leaning politics in general.

Which is just all sorts of lame. It’s silly to get pissed at someone for basically politely disagreeing with you, even if they do it all the time. It’s worse to just use them as a scapegoat to rant about how nobody seems to agree with you. If you don’t like that few seem to be on your side whatever that might be, you can either:
a.) go somewhere else, or
b.) grow a thicker skin and suck it up.

Whining in affect how everybody here needs to be “moderate” like you is the worst kind of pathetic.

but Islam is the most commonly cited religion used by terrorists to attack America here and abroad. Also, all countries which execute gays are Muslim countries, and a majority of Muslim countries criminalize LGBT people while a majority of non-Muslim countries don’t, and most Muslim countries have oppressive societies and laws for women, like requiring hijab/burka, allowing honor killings, etc. Not that other countries are perfect, but this stuff is most widespread, intense, and institutionalized in Muslim societies. Even in America, 43% of Muslim-American women wear hijab/burka according to Pew; that’s far higher than event exists Orthodox Jews as as percentage of American Jews overall (only 10% of US Jews are Orthodox of any sort, 6% Hasidic with their weird dress), Hindus and other religions in America don’t wear traditional dress as much as Muslims here.

What happened to the secularism progressives are supposed to like? What happened to the human rights they’re supposed to care about, both here and abroad?

The simple answer to the very real questions you ask is that the Left (with some notable exceptions) has ensconced itself in the belief that the culture of these societies is why these human rights violations are institutionalized and prevalent. The religion, in this case Islam, is ancillary; it plays no meaningful part in their societies other than as the conduit to justify their long-held cultural beliefs.

This leaves the ultimate question of why the “Christian” world embraced secularism and Enlightenment values where the “Muslim” world did not. The go-to answer for the left is “colonialism.” The white Christians colonized or otherwise meddled in the affairs of the Muslim world and this prevented them from liberalizing along with their contemporaries. Lack of education, oppression, etc.

It never crosses their mind that the primary dictates of Islam are malignant towards secular democracy where as Christianity is more less ambivalent. That or white people are just smarter and realized they needed to stop letting religion dictate their societies.

I’d consider it a shot across the bows, if I were you. I’d start rethinking my basic tenets and where I get my information/talking points from.

In fact, I did that years ago. Ended up sliding from Libertarian to “Libertarian In Theory But Liberal In Practice”.

As much as it’s nice to believe otherwise, some people sincerely hold the opinions and post in the manner of the OP. Second, there’s a collective action problem. On any board, and this board especially, *someone *is going to engage racists even when they seem to be trolls. It might as well be someone smart and patient.

As to deflection, I think the only part of your characterization about the progressive opinion on Islam that I disagree on a big way with is the colonialism part. I think it’s more random chance - some religions will just happen to develop a little differently. Since there have been so many times in which the Muslim world was generally more peaceful than the Christian world (and vice versa), I don’t think the texts and tenets of the religions have much to do with it.

I’ll gladly acknowledge that Islam was more Enlightened during the Middle Ages. It has since regressed where the Christian world has progressed. The question is why? And if you believe many liberals don’t blame western imperialism you are the ignorant anus.
