Pitting PADI and SCUBA (lightly)

I was issued my Junior Dive Licence from PADI at 12 years old. I did the whole course.

Ditch and recovery - remove ALL (tank, mask, BC everything) your gear, through it in the deep end of the pool. Now. Go get it. Don’t come up until it’s on. All of it.

Abuse (don’t know what else to call it) We would swim in the pool with gear and ‘instructors’ would come around and take off your mask, shut off your air (Now that’s a common occurance  ) rip the regulator out of your mouth, whatever.

Open water instruction was in a gravel pit in Illinois in NOVEMBER.

At 16 I had to send in for my ‘Adult’ licences. No problem here ya go. Basic SCUBA diver. Whatever. (I’m 43 now)

The classifications have changed. Since I only did one open water dive for my test, I am not an ‘Open Water Diver’. I don’t dive a lot, but I do have 30 open water dives logged. Including the Blue Hole at 140 feet.

Ehhhhh. I just found this out on a trip to the Dominican Republic. I had ordered a new C card and it said Basic Diver instead of Open Water. Never noticed it before myself. Shit, I’ve been diving since Cousteau was a MIDDLE AGED MAN ( ).

My wife thinks it’s a bit funny. She got here PADI open water 7 years ago, but still relies on me for instruction and understanding the physics of the operation.

Never had a problem with this in Mexico. But in the Dominican Republic, watch out.

Dive Shop - This says BASIC Diver
Me - Umm yep, that’s my PADI card
DS - What is a BASIC Diver?
Me- Ummm, I really don’t try to do any stunts or anything. I’m pretty boring when it gets right down to it.
DS - We have never seen a BASIC diver before.
Me - Hi! See there on the card? I was certified in 1976.
Eniplas Wife - Look Honey, It says I’m an ‘Open Water’ Diver on my card.
Me - [sub]thanks hon. That will clear this right up [/sub]
Eniplas Wife - I have a higher certification than you?? How could that happen?
Me - [sub]Umm red tape, lets not talk about it now.[/sub]
Enipals Wife - Isn’t this funny!
Me - [It is said that women have a look that can kill. Men have them too.]
DS - Show us your log book, and then you can dive with us.
Me - Fine, I really glad I brought it with me.

Anyway, I guess after 30 years of diving, I have to get my card upgraded so that I can continue diving. I may have to take some sort of resort thing.

The HORROR.
