Pitting the American Film Institute

Apparently, the American Film Institute is picking the top 100 movie quotes of all time - the nominees can be found here.

They nominated 400 quotes.

Four hundred quotes.

Four hundred lobsterfucking quotes.

They did find room for “All-righty then”. They found room for “Bring out the gimp” and “They call it a ‘Royale with Cheese’.” They found room for the “La-dee-da, la-dee-da” from Annie. La-dee-da indeed.

And yet they didn’t include Samuel L. Jackson’s Righteous Man speech - one of the most chilling and powerful deliveries of our time. Scratch that, ever.

How? Why?

This is quite a turd in the AFI’s cap.

Four hundred lobsterfucking quotes.

Over here, Gadfly.

Four Star Wars quotes.

NO Star Trek quotes.

Humph.

What!?

Not even the “Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most… human”?

Bastards!

That too, is a travesty. But choosing between “KHAAAAAAAAN” and the Righteous Man speech is hardly even a choice.

Yep, ol’ Sam never had a chance.

Nope. Star Trek has been dissed.

The “I’m king of the world” quote from Titanic was included, but nothing from Brian’s Song. I’ve never seen that movie, but surely a film that can make grown men cry like little girls must have at least one memorable quote.

I did see Schindler’s List represented.

KHAAAN!!!

Pure robbery if that quote didn’t make the list.

The films are in alphabetical order, so you can quickly see there are no Star Trek quotes.

A travesty, I tell you, a travesty! For crying out loud, “I want the fairy tale,” from Pretty Woman, but no “I think we’re looking at the next step in our evolution?” No, “It is very cold in space?” No, “Mother, he killed everyone we left behind!”

No “What does God need with a spaceship”?!

No " The needs the many out weigh the needs of the few…"

[Audioence losses it]

“…or the one.”

No “Arrest yourself.”

No " Space the final…"

I’m gatified to note the inclusion of “Nobody puts Baby in a corner,” but I’m a little disappointed that there is only one Spicolli quote ("Hey bud, let’s party), one LOTR quote (“My precious”) and that “I am the motherfucking shore Patrol, motherfucker!” from The Last Detail was omitted completely.

They did include, “Sometimes, you just gotta say, What the Fuck,” from Risky Business, but come on, do you really think an obscene quote is going to make the top 100 list? They have to air it on network tv, you know, not HBO. It won’t be the same quote if they say, “Sometimes, you just gotta say, What the beeeeep.”

Two quotes from Dr. Strangelove and neither of them are the famous “corrupting our precious bodily fluids.”?

WTF?
I don’t like this list.

Then again, I’ve not really been all that impressed with many of AFI’s previous lists, either.

What, no “Ja!” from the 1933 classic Gebroeders Van Raemdonckhulde (XIVe IJzerbedevaart)? Outrageous I say!

Well, it is American Film Institute, after all.

No “My friends…You bow to no one”?

Nothing from Holy Grail?

And how about “I’ve got a bad feeling about this”?

But hey, at least I finally know what “What a dump!” is from. And, my man David Patrick Kelly is on the list!

 I pit that annoying Acrobat Reader file. It’s ugly on my screen and I hate pushing my way through the document with the little “hand” thing. It would have been nice of them to actually put the list on their website somewhere! I’m not even going to bother trying to read the list.

P.S. “Where the devil are my slippers?”

Give them credit for two of the best:

“Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers* are starving to death!”

*“sons of bitches” in the stage and Lucille Ball movie version.

and

“No wire hangers, ever!”
