Pix from the past

Here’s a collection of 70 photos, taken between 1939-1943, depicting a cross section of American life:

If you click on “Checklist of Objects” it gives you a list of the photos w/ the location and a brief desciption along w/ a link to the enlarged photo.

Way cool! Thanks A.R. Cane. I know several people who will really like this link. Again, thanks for finding and sharing this.

And all in color too.

Mmmm… Kodachrome-icious.

Have some of these been touched up? Because some look amazingly well kept, while others have that typical washed out look. (Too pink, too yellow)

The pictures are cool!

I work in a museum which has a massive archive of old photographs from the 1840s to the present. I love looking through them, though I always have a twinge of sadness, because you know they’re long since dead.

We also have a large collection of Victorian mortuary photographs. Some of them are strangely beautiful.

This is a very cool site. You don’t often see colour photos from that era.

It doesn’t like any of them have been retouched. I imagine that some of them have weathered the ravages of time better than others. The magenta and yellow colour casts are probably due to the colour dyes breaking down. I wish they’d corrected the white balance and contrast before uploading the scans, but maybe they wanted to maintain an authentic vinage feel.

Wow this is an excellent site, thanks for the link!

I’m a huge fan of historical photographs. One of my favorite sites is the Cleveland Memory Project, an extensive collection of photographs and other media chronicaling various facets of Cleveland’s history.

One of my hobbies is taking present-day photographs from the same locations taken in the old pictures:

I have lots more that need to be organized and described. I really should get back to it!
