any good stories from any deliverers or deliverees here?
I was delivering pizza in Belmar NJ, and I had a late night delivery to a certain apt building on the second block from the beach on 5th ave. apt. 37. As I walked up the stairs of the apartment building, I could hear HBO’s between movie segment… LOUD! I figured (probably correctly, that someone was -really- resented by their neighbors. I found apt 37, and IT WAS THE NOISY HBO APARTMENT!!! I knocked on the door.
Nothing Happened.
I Knocked again.
The Pizza-Ordering Guy stubbornly persisted in his absence.
I Knocked Harder.
Nothing.
I Pounded with a closed fist.
Nothing.
I waited for a pause in the blaring TV noise… Then Pounded on the door again.
Nothing Happened…
I left…
I went to the boardwalk, called the guy’s phone, and just as I was about to hang up, he answered in a gravely voice that put Scott Muni’s to shame. He sounded disoriented, and possibly drunk. His exact words:" Uh… Hello?"
Me: Hi, I was just at your door with the pizza you ordered…
Him: Uhhh… OK! Uhmmm… I’m sorry, It’s my problem, not your problem… Ummm… OK. It’s my problem… I’m sorry. Uhhhh…
This last bit worried me, especially the bit about problems…
Me: Ok. I am going to be there in about ninety seconds, OK?
Him: OK… (more bits about his ‘problem’)
Me: bye.
When I got to the door, he was standing there, wearing an open bathrobe, a t-shirt, possibly a toupee (sometimes he wore it, sometimes not. I learned this in subsequent orders)
I don’t know if he was wearing underwear or not, but the Key is this… HIS BATHROBE WAS OPEN… HE WAS WEARING NO UNDERPANTS, AND HIS 60 YEAR OLD MR. HAPPY WAS JUST -OUT THERE-!!!
I told the user that he owed 22.48 for his 2 large pizzas, with one topping on each, and he paid me… He paid with a two dollar bill, four ones, a fifty-cent peice, and twenty-three dollars and fifty cents IN QUARTERS! He counted out all ninty-four quarters one at a time, pulling them out of a canvas bag. I found out later, at another pizzaria, that he is a bartender somewhere (wonder what kind of place…ewwwww!) He is still called by the pizza delivery guys as NAKED MAN!
I delivered pizza twice to George Washington. Or rather, to the guard at Mt. Vernon, VA. (The owner of most Domino’s Pizza franchises in the DC area lives in the same delivery area as Mt. Vernon.)
I had a couple of $200 deliveries, with proportionate tips.
I was never mugged, but a co-worker was assaulted once just for the hell of it. (Neither his money nor pizza was taken.) He came back to the store all bloodied. His English wasn’t too good, but his brother was there (he also delivered), and helped get the story. After he felt better, he and his brother clocked out with the manager’s blessing. They then went and got some of their friends, went back to the apartment complex, and beat the crap out of his assailants. (Not in the Domino’s Book of Conduct, but I was glad they did it!)
MTV had an unbroadcasted (due to the riot) beach party in Belmar, NJ. A riot broke out on the day when the rap music part of the beach party was going on. A BIG black guy demanded pizza and cokes from me (a cop was 30 ft away and oblivious- he was dealing with something) just before the riot broke out. The man was bent over at the waist and had a good deal of his torso stuck into my car in the bumper to bumper traffic. He slapped me around a bit when I told him the pizza was for someone else, and before it got too nasty, a gap in traffic opened up, and I floored it. I had quite an adrenalin buzz, and I bet the guy had a nasty bruise on his right side from the CRX doorframe. There was chaos, mass damage, and bloodshed that day. Thanks MTV!
A friend of mine and I were driving home from a nightclub in a blizzard. This was a pretty severe storm. we were passing half-buried 4X4s and Jeeps all the way home. I guess her little Escort was light enough it did not get stuck. We made several stops including one to pick up a pizza guy. He was trudging through, on foot to make his delivery. He wanted to be dropped off at the house so we did. Talk about work ethic! Hope he got a good tip!
