I’ve been meaning to post this for a while. Any linguist or just regionally savvy Dopers able to help me out with this?
First is a woman who generally spoke typical US newscaster English, as far as I could tell, but very distinctly pronounced “can’t” to rhyme with “want.” I think she was from the Northeast, but it is possible she may have been from another English-speaking country. English was definitely her native language, but just possibly not US English.
Second is a man who pronounces “couldn’t” and “wouldn’t” as “coont” and “woont”. This one is definitely Northeastern US.
Both of these folks seem to be from higher rather than lower socioeconomic groups. If these folks are from New England as I suspect, what part of New England?
