Places you wish you had visited in your life

Or maybe even plan to visit before you kick the proverbial bucket. I’ve seen some cool things in my life: the pyramids/sphinx, Victoria Falls, Niagara Falls, The Matterhorn, the Serengeti, Eiffel Tower, Antelope Canyon to mention some. But there are still places I wish I’d been able to visit. Here are a few:

Machu Pichu
Petra
The Himalayas
Taj Mahal

There are others, but that’s a start. I truly appreciate being able to see what I’ve seen, as most people never get the opportunity.

So what’s your regret/wish list?

But did you go to Katmandu? Bob made it sound so good and got me fired up, and then he went without me.

I’d like to go to the Great Barrier Reef, the Vatican/Rome and Mexico City.

Southern Italy to see where my grandparents were born.

Barcelona, before it became clogged with tourists. I wish I had moved to Japan about fifty years ago.

Dan

Been to both, and Sienna and Florence. I was living in Europe for about six years, so saw a lot of it. Also got to Japan, so I saw a number of the temples/shrines and got fairly close to Mt. Fuji.

I’ve been lucky to visit many of the places on my list. My next big one is Hiroshima, which I plan to do some time in the next few years.

A lot of my best memories were activities; hut-to-hut hiking in the Alps, backcountry skiing in Hokkaido, trekking in Nepal, diving in the Caribbean, hiking the Grand Canyon.

On the list (many in the planning stage): Patagonia, Sahara Desert, safari in Africa, Antarctica, hut-to-hut skiing in Scandinavia, Maldives, Dubai, Jerusalem.

Yeah, Patagonia would be on my list, as well. I have a friend who goes fly fishing there nearly every year. I’ve seen the Sahara, but not trekked it, and I’ve done several safaris and can highly recommend them.

I’d like to go to Australia and/or New Zealand, but the trip to get there is stopping me. That’s a looooong way. Likewise Singapore.

More realistic: Montreal, a train trip through the Canadian Rockies, Sicily, New Mexico. I’ll be seeing Amsterdam, a collection of towns in Germany, Vienna and Budapest next year, so that will be interesting.

On a trip to Rome, one day we were given the choice of the Sistine Chapel or Pompeii. I chose Pompeii and I don’t regret it, but I do wish we’d had another day so I could have seen the Sistine Chapel.

I’d love to see Australia and New Zealand, but the thought of the gawd-awful long flight doesn’t thrill me. I suppose if I could afford to fly first class…

I, too, have reached the age where long flights have become too exhausting for me.

I’d like to see:

Japan (I’m somewhat of a Japanophile)
Norway (where my ancestors came from)
Germany (I saw a little bit of it while on a trip to eastern France, and I fell in love with it)

But nowadays we’re restricted to where we can drive in a few hours, so that means coastal California and Oregon only.

I’ve never been to any of the National Parks in the western U.S.; I’ve never been to Yosemite, Zion, Yellowstone, Sequoia, or the Grand Canyon, for example. Would like to some day.

I’ve been to a lot of fun places, but there are a few I regret not seeing.

We had a work trip to both Russia and China, but I missed it because of family vacation. I’m glad for the family vacation, but I don’t see going to either of those places now, particularly of course Russia, and I would have liked to.

I’d go to Japan and New Zealand if I could teleport, but even flying first class is more slog than I’m up for. I spent a lot of my work time traveling, and I think five or six hours is my limit now.

I’m younger than most of you, so I still have time to see the things on my list. Except Russia had always been on my list and now I wish I’d gone there back when relations between Russia and the West were better. I’m thinking traveling there now as an American tourist probably isn’t advisable.

But I would really like to visit Patagonia, New Zealand, and the Galapagos Islands one day, but I figure I still have time to see them.

I’d like to see Mt. Everest in person. I don’t need to touch it.

I spent 36 hours in Barcelona once. We went to Park Guell. We had tickets to see the Sagrada Familia but my wife bought them for the wrong date so we gave them to a couple of random people outside the thing because we were flying out later that day. I’d like to actually go in and see it sometime.

Singapore seems like a must-see if I ever find myself on that side of the globe.

I’m 57 and live in Ohio. And with the exception of Canada, I’ve only visited two other countries: New Zealand and Singapore.

I loved New Zealand, and want to go back. The south island is exceptionally beautiful.

I’ve visited Singapore twice. Did not like it at all, and couldn’t wait to leave. YMMV, of course.

What was it you didn’t like about Singapore?

Absolutely worthwhile, despite all the tourists. Utah and Arizona are easy driving and you can cover a lot of parks and monuments in a short period of time. I can’t recommend Antelope Canyon highly enough. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but what an amazing slot canyon.

Nothing wrong with the Oregon coast. We used to drive it every year (or at least the southern half) and never tired of it. If you go inland to Smith Rock, it’s really worthwhile. Sort of the grand canyon of Oregon. Be aware that there is a fairly steep climb up out of there. Here’s a photo I took. Also, the Wallowa Valley is really pretty and you can drive up to the Snake River overlook on the fire road.

I agree about New Zealand. That long flight always put me off, even when I was younger.

With enough money, I’d like to ride a lot of the Chinese high-speed rail network, zipping from city to city, then wandering about in each one.

I’ve also wanted to do one of those year-long cruise voyages where you visit 40-70 nations.

I found Singapore more boring than anything, except I got a little addicted to their food courts (hawker markets). But I didn’t feel like there was much there there.
