Played a 5th edition game of Warhammer 40k recently...

A few years ago I collected an Imperial Guard Army. One big move (and many lost/broken models later) I still had my Guard army. My best friend collected Necrons, and last year bought some $5000.00 gaming table. Aside from the derision for how much he paid for the thing, I decided he might as well get his money worth, and one sunday him and I had a few beers and finally got around to playing 5th edition.

We didn’t play any special rules, just our own blow the fuck out of everything on the table games. It was pretty fun, in particular because our armies weren’t really optimised for each other. Its a fun matchup, because it reminds me of the whole Terminator type future where a ragtag army is fighting robot skeletons.

Anyone else into 40k? Its a fun game, especially casual with friends (Why does that Chimera have a flamer glued to the end of its turret? Its a hellhound? oh, ok!). There’s only a couple of gripes with this edition I have:

Wound shenanigans- If you have a squad of multi-wound models that have different loadouts, there’s a loophole that lets you spread out wounds in a way you wouldn’t be able to if they’re all the same configuration.

4+ coversaves which, while benefits armies like mine (with crappy armor saves normally) kind of bogs down shooting and makes things less decisive.

Codexes which offer great units, except one unit is blatantly 20% better/cheaper/etc with no downside which makes taking the other unit tactically pointless- why take a Devil Dog when a Vendetta cost the same points and does everything plus more? Oh yeah, a Vendetta gunship model costs $66 USD

I recently got into it, and started a thread about it! The one actual gameplay experience I had so far did run into the wound shenanigans you mention - a Nob Squad of Orks is well-equipped to take advantage…

My friends play a lot of 40K and I love painting minis, including 40K stuff. My roomate loves his Mordian Iron Guard army. There’s a couple of Gray Knight, dark eldar, IG, Tau and Necron players at the local gamestore and some chaos fans as well. Don’t see much eldar down here, though. And only one ork player to my memory. One can usually find three or four of them at the gamestore every Saturday.
