Playground slides cause finger amputations

Just a warning for everyone with children or grandchildren. Some all metal slides are separating at the joint between the rails and the sliding surface resulting in fingers being caught, or worse.

This playground slide picture has always stuck with me.

Grate kid!

In 15 years as an ER doc I’ve seen lots of amputations but never one due to a slide. Growing up, our school put in an awesome three story playground climber which had a zip line and cylindrical spiral slides. I don’t think anyone got hurt, but a couple kids die from playground equipment each year in Canada and with the lawyers many of these climbers have been dismantled or much simplified. Can’t even toboggan or play road hockey in some places. I get the need for safety but think something has been lost.
