Playing Hearts on the computer

I have dial-up at home, so I generally have a game of something-or-other going on as I wait for pages to load, or if there are pauses in an IM conversation, or something. Generally I start with Free Cell, till I win a game, then play a game of Hearts (before proceeding to my true love, Rocket Mania).

If I get really screwed on the first hand or so, I will often just abruptly quit the game, because it’s clear I won’t win. (Yeah, I know, mature.) But sometimes I get so screwed on the first couple hands that I’ll keep playing, just to see if I can finish “not last.”

What about you? Do you finish every game of Hearts you start? Why do you quit, and why do you keep playing?

I pretty much quit the first game I get stuck with the dreaded queen of spades- I’m immautre as well

I pretty much always finish, unless I just get bored with it. I honestly don’t recall the last time came in less than first in a game of hearts.

I always finished, and like Antinor usually won. I only have two older versions and they are both teh st00p1d. I lose interest pretty quick.

The lowest score in hearts I have made so far.

I other 2’s but I have not done it while beating “Ben” who sits on my right.

I have won & beat “Ben” but the best I had was 11 to 108 in that game.

I’d like any game with a zero but so far I have not done it. Seems that on the machine I use most, if I am close it sets me up real bad and when I am just beating any player except “Ben” it does not get so nasty with the set-ups.

I have years yet to try and I’ll get there one day.

I play hearts on Pogo sometimes with the jack of diamonds option. I’ve finished games with a negative score before.

I don’t play online, but I played against the computer for a long time – until I discovered Spider Solitaire. Anyway, after I’d lost hundreds of games of hearts, my wife gave me this stragegy: Always try to short one suite. That allows you to play off cards earlier than other players. So, when I would pass cards, I always shorted whatever suite I could. I started winning about half the time. Then, over time, it got harder and harder to win, and now, no matter what I do, something always happens that I end up not winning. I’m not last, but I never win any more. Is it possible that my computer “learned” how to pre-empt my strategy?

Nah. If it could learn, it would know by know that when I start screaming “Take a trick! The asshole’s gonna shoot the moon!” it means that someone should take a trick because the asshole’s gonna shoot the moon.

Maybe your computer just isn’t programmed to receive voice commands. I’m tellin’ ya, these damn computers are smarter’n we give 'em credit for! I think they’re part of a conspir…

If we’re talking about the free Microsoft Hearts program that came with some versions of Windows… I have a screenshot saved somewhere of a game where I finished with 0 points. I was going for the “perfect game” of shooting the moon four straight times out of the gate after pulling off the first two, but didn’t get the right kinds of hands for the next three hands and had to settle for zeroing out and winning in five deals.
