Say say oh playmate,
Come out and play with me
And bring your dollies three
Climb up my apple tree
Slide down my rain barrel
Into my cellar door
And we’ll be jolly friends
Forever more, one two three four one two three four!
It was a clapping game that my cousin taught me when I was about 5 years old.
I don’t know if I will be a very good one. I shall stand up for you all in any board snafus, fetch your virtual refreshments, etc. Use your imagination
Thanks everyone. You guys totally kick started my memory. I think the version my mom sang said " Swing down my apple tree" because I always used to think that was weird. Also, something about a rain barrel (sp?) I never knew other people knew it as a clapping game. My mom just used to sing it as a lullaby or such. Good times, good times
“Shout down my rain barrel
Slide down my cellar door”
My dad explained to me that you shout in the rain barrel (at the bottom of a pipe from the gutters, used to collect water, as opposed to using the water pump) because it echoed. The cellar doors at my grandparents were set above the ground at an angle–you climbed up steps to get to the outside, and pushed the doors up to get out–somewhat like the storm cellar in the Wizard of Oz. You could slide down them, if you didn’t mind slivers…
