Playstation 4 Slim vs Original?

My son’s PS3 has ceased functioning. It seems like it might be a good time to move on to a PS4, and there are several models…

Can anyone give me a quick opinion on the PS4 Slim? Would this be an ok console for an 11 y.o.? We’re letting him play some Teen games, but he’s still limited from Mature. (He’s autistic, and has some social awareness issues to work through before we let him do those.)

My questions are essentially - does this model work as well as the regular PS4? Is 500GB enough memory for someone who basically plays Minecraft, Lego games, and is just barely starting on a few other games?

I have a slim and I like it well enough. You’re fine with the storage. And if, for some reason you’re not, I’m sure there’s a way to add an external.

Unless you really care about graphics or are planning on adding VR into the mix then a slim will be good enough for your needs.

Why not just get another PS3?

They’re not making new games for them is the main reason (or if they are, there aren’t many). When a new game comes out that he wants, it’s more likely to be PS4.

A PS3 would allow him to keep playing what he has, but not to get more down the road.

Kiddo informs me that they do make some new games for PS3, but that those are usually multi-platform games. New PS-only releases are likely to be PS4. I’m also told the graphics are better. Hmmm…

The PS4 slim is the same as the original part from removing the optical out port. It’s just slimmer. Maybe you were meaning to ask about differences between PS4 and PS4 pro ? 500 gb will be plenty.

But yes new games are still coming out for PS3, if you have a big library you might want to pick up a second hand PS3, you can easily get them for under $100 now.

We don’t have a huge library, but I’m trying to figure out what machine is the best fit for the household.

We probably don’t need more than the PS3 right now. I’m just hoping to avoid buying another machine in another year. Of course, the kiddo wants the PS4. Decisions, decisions.

(I did want to know the difference between the Slim and the Regular. All figured out now.)

The beauty of the PS3 for your son’s specific purposes is that there is a vast library of games available on the cheap, whether you buy them on disc or through PlayStation Network. (which has some good holiday sales going on now). If he hasn’t played them before, they’re just like new! And for the price of a new PS4 and one or two games, he could get a used PS3 and waaaaay too many games to care that they are a couple/few years old.

actually you can still order a refurbished original ps3 that’s backwards compatible with ps 1 and 2 you just have to specifically ask at the counter for one …

I have both a PS3 and PS4 and it seems like less and less decent sales are happening on PS3 titles on the PSN store, makes sense since it takes time and money to organise sale specials so they’d rather focus on PS4 sales. Thankfully there’s ebay / craigslist / etc. Loads of great PS3 games can be found used on disc for $10 or less.

The leap from PS3 to PS4 graphics is nowhere near as big as the leap from PS2 to PS3. Games like “The Last of US” on PS3 totally look modern and impressive. Amazing what they can get out of 10 year old hardware.
