Playstation 5

Here is what it will look like. Very odd looking machine, but I won’t care if it is a great console.

Looks horrific. I’m sure it’ll be an incredible machine though.

Looks like an early 2000s modem. Makes it even more likely for me to get an XBox Series X.

I never owned a PS4, so if this is fully backwards compatible and has a reasonable price point, I may be interested.

I am surprised they don’t just go for the black rectangle-ish shape. I hope this thing can rest on its side.

It’s clear they did not want a disc drive, but also knew that people still want to sell and buy old games in physical format.

Look at the two models.

Which looks like the real intended design?

Here it is on its side.

I’d prefer it in black. It will mess up the console motif in my living room.

It looks like something that will get knocked over and have to be expensively replaced a lot.

I don’t know why video game companies insist on showing their consoles upright when they debut them, but like almost every console, the PS5 can be placed on its side like a normal machine.

What consoles were actually kept upright by the majority of users once they hit the market?

The Wii?

I’ve had the following consoles and here is how I used them:

Atari 2600 - laying down
Playstation 1 - laying down
Gamecube - laying down
Wii - laying down
PS2 - both big and small ones I had were laying down
PS3 - yep, laying down
Wii U - laying down

I think some people kept their Wii upright like it was often shown, but it was by no means required to be that way.

Am I right that the Xbox Series X also lays down like a normal machine? The PS5 does.

I’m guessing it looks tall and sleek versus flat and squat.

Well, it kind of lays down more like a bread box, but yes. Next-Gen Xbox Launch Still Coming This Holiday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Says

I love the look of it. I think it’s beautiful. It’s much better than the mini-microwave that is the new Xbox.

I enjoyed the presentation, but no price point? No actual release date? C’mon Playstation…

ETA: I would also love to know how much memory the digital version has. My guess would be a TB or maybe two? I’m sure that it will be enough for a game or four and then you’ll have to pay for more, cloud-based memory.

I’d expect the same 825GB SSD in the digital version. It’ll just be marginally cheaper without the BluRay drive and licensing.

Games need to be installed to the SSD either way.

I am predicting $499 for the digital version and $549 or $599 for the disc-drive version.

I have to think the disc drive is worth it so you can buy and sell used games. I mean, in 3-4 years, games will be dirt-cheap for it and I want a disc version…

I really like the sleek design on the digital version, though. Is it possible to connect a USB disc reader to a Playstation? Because I use the one in my PC maybe twice a year these days.

Here is a size comparison, using the USB and Disc drive as measurements.

Pretty big. I imagine a slim version will come out in a couple years. These things are pretty big when new.

I am ambivalent about the design. I don’t much care for white in electronic gadgets but I have to give them credit for creating a striking and unique design which I could see growing on me.

I am not much of a gamer and haven’t purchased a console in more than a decade but I could see myself buying one at some point. I am more interested in VR. I expect PSVR 2 will be launched in a year or two and if it’s solid I would definitely consider a PS5.

If it plays all the PS4 games(or all the big ones), I may get one. I missed the entire PS4 generation, so that is a nice log of games and I’d have a system to run for the next 7 years(if PS6 comes out in 2027 or so).

There are a few games planned for PS5 I’m interested in, but even without those, I feel it would be worth it to buy it for playing PS4 games just for the load time improvement. If what they’re promising is true, it’s going to make a huge difference in gameplay.
