Play Station 5 news

Here is a thread to share any PS5 news and updates. As a launch date all I have seen is 4th quarter 2020.

Has anyone been following the updates?
What are the chances of there being a severe shortage of units this year? 100% 110%

I am really looking forward to a new and improved, better than the one I currently enjoy immensely Playstation. Retro capable, hopefully, because I still like to get into some Fallout 4 and Skyrim.

Supposedly the use of an SSD is going to virtually eliminate load times. I hope they can deliver on that. It will massively improve my enjoyment of these open-world games not to feel like getting up and getting a beverage or going to the bathroom every time I fast-travel.

Support for 120Hz TV is going to be a real eye-opener for people. The 3Hz of today’s flagship titles is so poor in comparison.

Suspend/resume is going to be excellent as well.

The Xbox One and PS4 were pretty lame compared to earlier hardware. These upcoming consoles should be revolutionary.

I am looking forward to it. I’m just wondering if it will be my 2020 Christmas present to myself or my 2021 Christmas present.

I’ll be lucky if I can afford it by 2022.
The last thing I heard was it was going to be backward comparable with PlayStation 4 games. Anybody know for sure?

I believe it will be backwards compatible with almost all PS4 games, but not anything earlier.

The SSD is supposedly some kind of heavily modified monster. I think I read that it’s supposed to have a transfer rate between 5 and 9 GB/second. That’s quite fast and should make for some impressive loading times (or lack thereof).

I think we’re missing a zero…30Hz.

What’s the price at launch likely to be?

I just read a few articles, and I didn’t see 120Hz mentioned anywhere?

$500-$550

It’s listed in the Sony blog that revealed the specs: Unveiling New Details of PlayStation 5: Hardware Technical Specs [UPDATED] – PlayStation.Blog

“Support of 4K 120Hz TVs”

It also reminds me that the new consoles will have variable refresh rates. That’s another revolutionary feature since it means developers no longer need to cap frame rates.

One concern I’d have is onboard storage capacity. The PS5’s 820GB SSD isn’t going to go very far. Game installs are already pushing 100+ GB this generation. I haven’t seen a good solution to this problem from Sony. Sony will probably just sell extra SSDs like really expensive memory cards.

Ah OK… So they’ll support it, but I guess my other question is whether the console itself will be able to actually put that out.

I’m certain Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 7 or whatever will take advantage of it. Of course, the reality is that the current installed base of HDMI 2.1 TVs is probably like 0.001%. It’s unlikely to be a marketed feature outside of esports-focused titles.

What I’m really curious about is whether it’ll support HDMI 2.0 resolutions like 1440p@120Hz. There’s basically zero TVs like that, but tons of monitors.

True, we’ll probably have to upgrade storage to keep more than a few games installed, but that won’t necessarily be a money grab by Sony. You can install any old laptop hard drive in the PS4; I swapped mine out for a 2TB third-party drive.

Here’s an article about how you’ll be able to add an M2 SSD in a dedicated expansion slot. The catch is that it has to be at least as fast as the stock drive to be compatible:

I can afford it at list price. I’m not going to get price gouged on EBay or fight a crowd if they didn’t make enough this year.

PS5 won’t allow you to install anything except old PS4 games on an external drive though. Any PS5 games have to be on an internal M.2 SSD which will be significantly pricier than getting a 3TB external drive for under a hundred bucks.

How much that’s a “money grab” will remain to be seen. Sony will allow 3rd party SSDs like you said but they’ll have to be certified for use on the PS5 in addition to matching speeds. Will there be a lot of certified drives available or will consumers mainly be forced to buy an “official” expansion drive?

well my extra HDDs for the Wii u ps4 and XB1 is all officially licensed and made by Seagate So I expect the same sort of arrangement eventually

Now what shocked me this gen is the price of a controller …60 bucks standard??? and there’s no real unlicensed 3rd party maker this time like in the ps2/360 days (granted those controllers were basically disposable after a month or two …)

PS5 sales/availability will be an interesting benchmark for the health of the global economy at the time of its launch. Covid has both disrupted the supply of electronics components and has possibly depressed the demand for an expensive gaming device. Which of these two effects will be stronger at launch time? For example perhaps electronics manufacturing will be back on its feet but consumers will still be tentative about purchasing a $500 + entertainment device and therefore sales will be disappointing but on the flip side getting a device will be easy. Or it could that consumers who are still wary about restaurants and events will be happy to splurge on home entertainment.

I wasn’t saying adding an external drive to the PS5 would be a good solution. I was just pointing out that Sony made the PS4’s stock drive replacable by an end-user and did NOT require that the replacement be “official” or licensed by Sony, so if they were to follow precedent, they would not do that with the PS5 either.
