Apparently there will be a big announcement on June 4th. I’m thinking the release date and pricing will be announced.
That didn’t last long. Now they are saying the announcement with be postponed due to world events.
And apparently there are people upset about that, including (and this honestly surprised me a bit) non-Americans who don’t see those current events as having anything to do with them, so why should they suffer?
What’s the “world event” that postponed it? Corona? Or the riots? I certainly hope it’s the latter because it’s not like the former is that particularly new…
I believe more the riots/unrest and perhaps not wanting to showcase the latest super-realistically rendered military shooter.
It was precisely for that reason that I was surprised by the postponement (for which the given reason was to “allow more important voices to be heard.”) Sony is a Japanese company, and from what I undertsand, Western-style SJWism is a virtual nonentity in Japan. Plus, video games are huge in Japan itself, and are a worldwide market, doing a lot of business in countries that have nothing to do with what’s going on in the US right now.
PS4 sales in N. America were over 4x those in Japan. Granted, the US population is larger (though not 4x larger) but it’s probably not a market you want to potentially make trouble in for no good reason. The largest market was Europe and Western Europe seems more sympathetic to the movement than the government response. So, again, probably more risk than reward.
Plus the fact that Sony Interactive Entertainment, the division ‘in charge’ of the Playstation, is headquartered in San Mateo, California.
Does it matter? They are postponing a press event not the release of the system. Although I would like to see what information they are announcing it won’t matter if it’s pushed back a week or two.
I hope Sony pulls their usual blunder and over-panders to their expected target audience and gets egg on their face.
“Okay for the PS5 launch this year we have FIVE basketball games ready and we’re bringing back the fan-favorite Def Jam fighting game series!”
Def Jam Fight: NY was sweeeeeeeeet!
The event has been rescheduled for this Thursday, June 11:
I heard there’s going to be an expansion that lets you play PS4 games on it. It consists of:
- a plastic stand that lets you put a PS4 on top of the PS5
- an HDMI switch that lets you select between two HDMI inputs.
Semi-seriously, it might be cheaper to have people keep their PS4s, or buy reduced-price ones, rather than try to get PS4 games to work on a PS5.
All I want is my Mass Effect remaster
