Please consider this comprehensive ignore system add-in to new VBulletin

I would LOVE to be able to ignore the thread about how someones father stomped a kitten to death. I will not open it to read, and I would REALLY not like to even see it.

If it helps, it was a genuine accident.

The tech staff at the Chicago Reader is very reluctant to install hacks to vBulletin, because hacks might cause issues with performance, stability and/or security. It also increases the complications of upgrading the software. In this specific case, the hack also requires template edits. The tech staff resources are very limited and they prefer not to make changes to vBulletin.

Instead, might I suggest Firefox with the following add-on to serve the same purpose:

FfvB - vBulletin Management for Firefox 2.2.5

I just tested it with the SDMB and it seems to work.

I just got through recommending this on another board. I’ve used it a few times. Once on a particular ATMB that was got me way too mad.

The only bad thing is, if the ignored thread is the last edited in a particular forum, it will still show up on the main page. I got around this by installing BlockSite. If you really don’t want to go back to a thread, you can put the URL on the block list. Just make sure to not disable links, as that will mess up FfvB.

There’s something a little bizarre about going so far out of your way to avoid being confronted with even the suggestion that people are talking about things you don’t like.

I’ll just cut off the justifications sure to follow with the statement that I don’t think it’s justifiable, period.

I think it’s more to do with getting rid of clutter than avoiding anything. It’s like being able to go through your emails and delete the ones that don’t interest you so they’re not sitting in your inbox taking up space.

It’s not even threads with misleading thread titles, it’s threads that look interesting to you on the basis of their title, but aren’t. I’ve found myself clicking on a particular thread several times over a number of weeks (having forgotten that I’d already looked at it) only to read the op and go “that’s right, not interesting.” :smack:.

For me it’s more the fact that I often feel compelled to say things when I know I shouldn’t. It’s a way of reminding myself that I should stay out of it.

Yeah, it shows I’m immature. But I’ve had to come to terms with that fact, rather than pretending I’m more mature than I am.

I’ll check that out, thanks!

Exactly.

FYI, that Firefox extension seems to work great!

Just wanted to say that this add-on works extremely well. I would even go so far as to say that it’s made my time on Straightdope more enjoyable.
