Please, for the love of Og, help me find some good headphones!

I work 10 hour shifts, in the evenings, largely alone. I rely on my MP3 player to keep what’s left of my sanity. But I’m about ready to stap headphone manufacturers in the face. I had a good pair that came with my old MP3 player that lasted for several years before developing that same damn problem I’ve had with every set I’ve owned since I was ten years old: they develop that loose wire thing where one ear will keep cutting out whenever the wire gets bumped, so I end up walking around slapping the damn thing and looking like an idiot.

So, as I say, my good 'phones finally died, and since they came with the MP3 player, I couldn’t buy a replacement pair of the same kind. So I bought a replacement pair I found at Radio Shack for $20. OK, I know I can’t expect it to be the top of the line in quality, but I haven’t had these damn things for a month, and they’re already cutting out, which pisses me right the hell off.

So someone PLEASE tell me what kind of headphones to buy that will LAST! But, here’s the complication - not only do they need to last, but I have some rather specific preferences. They absolutely MUST have an in-line volume control dial. Since I’m in a lab, I often can’t easily reach my MP3 player when I need to adjust the volume (which is often). With an in-line adjuster, I can keep my gloves on and manipulate it through my lab coat and shirt. Additionally, I don’t really like ear buds. They’re just not comfortable for me - I must have funny shaped ears. The kind I like best are the ones that sort of clip on to the outside of your ear, like this, but I’m willing to consider alternate configurations.

As far as price goes, of course, I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg, but if I could feel sure that they’d last me for a few years of heavy use, I’d be willing to shell out a reasonable amount. Thanks in advance.

These sure aren’t ear buds

They don’t cost an arm and a leg. More like an arm, two legs, and an additional limb or protruberance of your choice.

Really and truly nice though.

I’m using these and fully satisfied. All the back-of-the-neck Japan-purchasable dealios I’ve ever had the only problem I have ever had is the foam cushion wrapper stuff that goes between your ears and the speakers will eventually wear through. But for $30 bucks buying a new pair every three years isn’t a big deal.

And very comfortable. I wear them all day at work and never notice them.

I generally swear by Panasonic Shockwave . Inexpensive, fairly long-lasting (generally takes me somewhere between 10 months and 2 years to wear out a set, and I listen on them a LOT,) lightweight cord that seems to be just the right length.

Yeah, that’s a good set of headphones.

I don’t know about any that meet your requirements, but some high-quality phones, such as my Sennheiser HD-497 or the newer EH-350, have detachable cords so you can replace it if it gets frayed.

Your best bet might be to buy a separate volume control:

Koss volume control

so you can buy whatever phones you like.

The Koss KSC-75 ear-clip phones are $13 on Amazon, so you could buy a whole bunch of those if you want.
